@DKThomp@firstadopter Business folks (and the media) don't understand that, unlike business, govt is not generally in the business of doing thing. It is mostly in the business of paying for things - which they don't actually get to stop doing.
@ryanburge@DKThomp As you discussed religion as a social institution, I wonder if you considered that, for several hundred years, Americans used community groups like the Kiwanis, Lions Club or Jaycees to fill the same role and how their decline contributes to happiness differences.
@ModeledBehavior@jeffspross There's an old saying - the meaning of your communication is the response you get. I'd guess Stewart's response is "common knowledge". Might be wise to stop blaming other people for your discipline's lack of communication skills.
@JamesSurowiecki The founders assumed that public officials would be sued (a lot) for violating people's civil liberties. The Supreme Court blocked that path starting with Pierson v. Ray
@JamesSurowiecki And progressives can point to a history of successes like public health, public education, support for seniors where simple govt interventions made huge improvements.
@PeterMoskos@johnarnold I wasn't really meaning to critique your book which I haven't read. It's just been my experience that policy responses are too often justified by small sample just so stories. Thank you Dr Deming for teaching me to not treat common cause variation as special cause variation.
@PeterMoskos@johnarnold Not necessarily. In any distribution, some are going to be above the mean, some below. That doesn't actually make them special. Control limits are usually set at 3 std deviations. Was the decline in NYC larger than that?
@PeterMoskos@johnarnold It's not reflexive - I followed Kevin Drum forever and the research he publicized seems convincing to me. So many people claim brilliance because they made money in a rising market. The evidence says NYC was not special so its strategies aren't either.
@johnarnold Crime declined everywhere significantly in the 1990s - more-or-less irrespective of which policies where adopted locally. Some credit the gradual elimination of lead in paint. Other reasons have been proposed as well.
