Dubious Distinction: Washington State ranks dead last (50 out of 50 states) for farm profitability according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

State level policies including high fuel costs/taxes, high taxes overall, and a mountain of red tape keeps constraining our farmers and the agricultural community. We are losing two farms everyday in our state on average too (Source: Seattle Times).

We must lower, not increase, the cost of doing businesses for farmers. Fuel prices can be reduced immediately by 55 cents a gallon of gas through pausing the Climate Commitment Act and Low Carbon Fuel Standards.

Farmers provide our food. It's well past time for state government to stop hindering them and instead have their backs.

Every major famine of the 20th century happened under government control of food supply. The Soviet Holodomor (1932-33): 3.5-7 million dead in Ukraine while Stalin exported grain. The Great Leap Forward (1959-61): 15-55 million dead while Mao's cadres seized harvests and falsified production records. Ethiopia 1983-85: the Derg regime used food as a weapon against Tigray and Eritrea while Western aid money subsidized the military. Bengal 1943: Churchill carries blame, yes, but wartime price controls and export requisitions crushed the local market's ability to signal scarcity.

Free market economists have documented this pattern for decades. Amartya Sen (not an Austrian, which makes this more interesting) laid it out in 1981: no famine has ever occurred in a functioning democracy with a free press and market prices. Prices communicate scarcity. When you suppress prices, you suppress the signal. Farmers stop producing, traders stop moving goods, and by the time bureaucrats notice the spreadsheets are wrong, people are already starving.

Every time you hear someone say food is "too important to leave to markets," ask them to name a counterexample. A single one. Because the 20th century ran the experiment at scale, with hundreds of millions of people as the test subjects, and the results came back the same way every time.

Free market thinkers see no mystery here. When the state prices a good above its market-clearing level and delivers inferior quality, entrepreneurs fill the gap. They risk execution to do it, which tells you how large the profit spread was. Risk-adjusted returns attract capital. That's true in Tang China, Habsburg Spain, and every Soviet bread queue you care to name (50c can steal this from me).

Wudi got his war revenue. He also got two centuries of institutional rot that his successors spent enormous energy pretending wasn't there.

During the Ottoman period, Muslims enjoyed performing all kinds of mutilations. Ears, noses, lips, tongues, breasts, and genitals were primarily cut off. Not just those, though. Let's recall here the Saint Raphael of Mytilene, who was hanged from a tree and had his lower jaw cut off, while the twelve-year-old martyr Irene was roasted in a barrel on the Tuesday of Easter in the year 1463, ten years after the fall of Constantinople.

In many cases, the severed body parts "adorned" the warrior collection of the janissary. The pashas gave bakshish (tips) to every "brave" Muslim warrior according to how many ears of "infidel" Christians he brought back. He himself confirmed his bravery and "manliness" among his peers by having a "komboloi" (worry beads) made from the nipples of breasts he had cut off from women. The bravest man was the one with the longest komboloi after a massacre and looting.

Blinding with various sharp objects was also common. This was particularly frequent during periods of massacres and atrocities. Many unfortunate Christians remained blind for the rest of their lives because they had the misfortune of a horde of janissaries passing through their land. The Egyptians under Ibrahim Pasha were especially notorious for this crime.

Central planning doesn't collapse cleanly. It rots from the inside, and Poland in 1989 is one of the most vivid autopsies in modern economic history.

The Polish United Workers' Party had spent decades printing złotys to cover budget shortfalls. By mid-1989, monthly inflation hit 54%. By October, it crossed 54% again, then kept climbing. Annual inflation for 1989 landed near 640%. The government was manufacturing scarcity, month after month, by conjuring money it did not earn.

Picture what this did to ordinary Poles. A loaf of bread priced at 100 złotys in January cost ten times that by autumn. Wages nominally rose, but purchasing power evaporated faster than printers could run. Workers demanded wage indexation. The government granted it, which required more printing, which produced more inflation. A perfect feedback loop.

Finance Minister Leszek Balcerowicz launched his shock therapy program on January 1, 1990: tight monetary policy, price liberalization, and an end to subsidies. Free market thinkers had long argued that price controls suppress the signals producers need to allocate resources. Balcerowicz proved the point by removing the controls and watching shelves fill within weeks.

The lesson Poland burned into history: every hyperinflation is a political event in economic clothing. Governments inflate because discipline is painful and printing is easy, right up until it destroys everything.
