The regret rate of gender-affirming surgery is 0.3%.
The regret rate for knee replacement surgery is 6-30%.
"Transition regret" is a false narrative being pushed by the media to prevent people from getting access to life-saving, gender-affirming healthcare.
However...
Let's address that 0.3%.
Many outside factors contribute to a trans person's regret:
👉Unsupportive families.
👉Transphobic environments.
👉Normal post-op distress.
Just because that 0.3% of people regret their surgery doesn't mean they're not transgender.
The fear of regret shouldn't stop thousands of trans people from getting access to the healthcare they deserve.
Regret rates exist - but not for the reasons the media are trying to push.
This is the reality of so many doctors.
Ones who arrive from abroad, who have so much to give, yet are thrown into a system that fails to offer humanity.
Be the colleague who sees them,
Who values them

Because, we're humans before we're health professionals.
He was a doctor.
New to the UK from Nigeria.
A short clinical attachment then onto the rota.
People started talking.
Judging.
One day, I asked if he was OK.
He began to cry.
Because here's the thing...
I am at a loss for words.
How many more residents, physicians, humans need to take their own lives before people start to listen?
Dr. Nakita Mortimer, you deserved more.
Preparing for #asco23 & absolutely LOVE @asco's language of respect towards both patients AND colleagues
* do not blame patients
* do not dehumanize or conflate them with their diagnosis/tumor type
* acknowledge cancer isn't always preventable
* address & recognize peers equally
I spent my first months as an Afghan refugee in a New York homeless shelter with my mother and brother.
Now, I'm back in New York, but this time as a tech startup founder, studying at @Columbia.
Education is the fundamental right of every Afghan girl. Give them the chance to learn and they'll reach heights beyond imagination. I'm a testament to that.
I was honored to share my journey at the @ColumbiaGS Scholarship Gala. Incredibly grateful to be a part of this amazing community.
Thank you for having me.
When I was burning out in medicine, I was full of “Once I…” statements
Once I…
… pay off my loans
… buy the doctor house
… get that leadership position
… create a successful side gig
… get promoted
THAT is when I’ll be happy
This is called an arrival fallacy

The last day of recruitment for STAMPEDE today - huge thanks to almost 12000 patients and over 5000 researchers. Thread below summarises some of the contributions we have made. It’s been a huge honour and privilege to lead this.
Surgical instrumentation shouldn’t be one size fits all
These are surgeons with 5.5 and 8.5 glove-size hands from SAGES. Thanks to your participation at our booth 303
4/7 Dear IMGs, I cannot put in words how hard it is to start the most demanding period of your career in a different country, culture, and language. You’ll often get to the end of the day and words won’t come out. Your brain will shut down. That is NORMAL. Give yourself grace.
There’s some medical students who I’ve rotated with who I would never let care for my family. Wouldn’t let them near anyone I love with a 10-ft pole.
Did they know all the answers when asked? Yes. Were they prompt, timely, and made good small talk with seniors? Without question.
Just a reminder that patients on ventilators can often hear us.
Talk to them how you would if they were awake. Introduce yourself. Be kind. Explain what’s happening (before you examine them or do a procedure). They deserve this. #meded
This week I learned from a sleep expert @UCLA that if we go to sleep 1-2hrs later than usual we get none (zero) of the normal in-sleep bolus of growth hormone that night, regardless if we sleep in. In other words, keeping regular to-sleep times is as important as sleep duration.
