Researching the servants of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.
CDA PhD from University of Sheffield and Chatsworth on servants in the eighteenth century
What a privilege to be the first heritage talk in this incredible room! Thanks to all the team @BuxCHE for yesterday evening and for inviting me to part of your exciting programme of events.
@LouLikesToKnit@HistoryButler@ChatsworthHouse Oh I love these, so good to see them again. I was always very fascinated from the floor plans and inventories by the proximity of the washroom and wash court to the coal store. I love to imagine the movement about this space. So interesting to see the development.
@sunitathind You make a very important point which I hope can be explored in more depth in many more programmes. Black people at all levels of society were coming face to face with these concepts of beauty- Georgiana's hairdresser Gilbert was a black man with his own business in 1780s London.
I had so much fun filming with @Lisa_Eldridge at Chatsworth for the Georgian episode of Make Up: A Glamorous History and sharing how much money and effort when into Georgiana's beauty looks. Looking forward to watching the Victorian episode next week.
@sunitathind A very important question and one I hope will continue to be addressed throughout the series but there is definitely much more work to be done. The episode focuses on the idealised beauty standards present in Georgian England which overwhelming emphasised white women
It took me a while to get my hands on a copy but here it is. Thank you to @HistoryExtra for interviewing me about Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire and her hairdresser ahead of @Lisa_Eldridge's 'Make Up: A Glamorous History' on BBC2 tomorrow night.
@JaneLHodson@HistoryButler@lucy_brownson Welcome to the family Lucy! I'm very excited to hear more about your project and your future findings. Sorry I'm only just saying hello - I've had a long Twitter hiatus
@makeitcreateit@BuxtonMuseum @LearnBuxton Thanks Louise! There are more upcoming Meet the Expert talks about the Cavendish family and their servants as well.
Very excited to be giving this talk on the servants of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire @BuxtonMuseum tomorrow as part of the @buxtonfringe.
I can promise there will be loyal lady's maids, interfering governesses and an appearance from an eighteenth-century parrot.
Our 'Meet the Experts' programme for #BuxtonFringe kicks off next Tuesday (9th) with @hwallace24 taking about Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire's servants; the maids, footmen, hairdressers and governesses who were part of the most personal and intimate aspects of Georgiana’s life.
Very proud of these two @HistoryButler @FeeClapperton for all their hard work to reach their theses hand in. They have made the last three years of PhD life a joy. Looking forward to all the exciting things still to come
