Today’s joy: one of my calc Ss always writes sentences explaining his thinking, but he does it in a very funny way. Examples include “yikes, definite integral. let’s try some u-substitution” or “let’s take the derivative of this mess of a function!” #iteachmath#mtbos
Why can’t Ss have blankets on zoom? I often have one during my classes. People have messaged me saying it’s a great idea! It doesn’t mean I’m falling asleep, and it doesn’t mean I’m not listening. It just means I’m more comfortable, and I do my best work when I’m comfortable 😊
Sometimes it’s fun to be the student again while I’m completing tasks on my own before implementing them with students. Color coded growth pattern problem - only one of many solutions of course! #iteachmath#MTBoS
During these times, we should appreciate the small wins, both inside and outside of the classroom. Small classroom win: new students unmuted themselves! Small non-classroom win: a kind man at Trader Joe’s gave me free peanut butter cups bc they were out of the type I asked for
If you know me, you know I love manatees 😁 found this meme and will definitely be using it as a temperature check in future classes. Which manatee are you? #teachertwitter#iteachmath
We need to teach our students HOW to listen, respond, and ask good questions during a discussion. We cannot expect them to engage in productive mathematical discourse without first demonstrating the skills necessary to do so! #iteachmath#MTBoS
I TA for Ss who have been learning calc online all semester, which is tough! They had a sudden change in profs last week, so I took a moment to check-in during discussion. Some of them hadn’t spoken all semester but very positively responded to my check-in. Heart is warm! #MTBoS
My second day activity in AP Stats: I have students “draw a “statistician.” Invariably, the majority of class draws a white dude (usually with glasses). I teach predominantly students of color. (1/3)

Just to recap: a billionaire is getting free publicly-funded health care so he can stay on the job and sue to block low-income people from getting publicly-funded health care paid for by billionaires.
It’s Ratio time in many 6th grade classes. Reminder: don’t use boy/girl as a way to generate ratios. If your curriculum resource does- start the conversation around why it’s problematic and have students rewrite the problem to be more inclusive. #iteachmath@MTMS_at_NCTM
Trump throws a tantrum on stage and breaks every norm.
Many media: “A heated debate last night with each man going on the offense.”
Reflexive both sides-ism is a habit media just can’t quit, even when doing so would serve the truth and our democracy.
Stop rewarding him.
