Acting is tough... BUT teaching is like putting on 6 improv shows a day, where the audience talks and constantly interrupts you, and the audience has to pass a test at the end to ensure that they were paying attention.
Today was week 2 of students staying after class just to hang out and chat (specifically about astrology)! What connection moments have you had lately?
"Throw out some burns so deep-fried it will be like a county fair" & other jokes from @CalcuChris today sent students into a chat takeover to joke back & it brought me SO much joy! Online learning stole some of the ways for kids to just be kids but we're slowly finding ways :,)
I was asked to imagine my physical classroom space this week! Donβt get me wrong, I was given a wealth of online resources, but none of them felt right, so I turned back to the trusty (cow!!) pencil and paper! Highly recommend if youβre feeling the zoom fatigue :)
Good morning! If you only look at one map today, make it this one. This is what red/blue states really look like. Land doesn't vote. People do. #ElectionResults2020 https://t.co/dfpl4N2MLq
Listening to CNN and heard "get your paper and pencil, your calculator, or your Alexa, however you do your math" and laughed because @CalcuChris really DOES use his Alexa to do math during class! Keeps things moving and (I think) gets a chuckle out of the students
The typical representations (red/blue counties, % remaining) often do a disservice to the orders of magnitude of difference present in seemingly similar situations during an election.
This graph provided me some clarity. What else should we be using to better represent the data?
watching these election results and consistently doing SO much math(ematical reasoning) β another day, another real-world application for the future classroom!
Stumbled across this graphic earlier and thought about how I've noticed even the people in my life who say they can't stand math seem to stop and try these when they pop up on social media. Do you think we can recreate that impulsive engagement in math class? What does it take?
Friendly reminder that even if you have situated yourself as a mathematical authority in the classroom, saying "this is an easy problem" does not mean it will be easy for every learner in the room
Took me a few days to put words to it, but I'm realizing I love this meme so much because it finally gives me a visualization of exactly how I *feel* when I factor! Something I've been doing for years suddenly makes so much more sense
