Shannon’s 1937 MIT master’s thesis (and its 1938 AIEE journal paper version) that showed you can treat relay/switching circuits as Boolean algebra—so you can analyze what a relay network does and synthesize/optimize one systematically, using symbols instead of only wiring intuition.
