Bitcoin L2s and Ordinals are gaining more interest. With that a lot of new users are discovering @stacks recently.

A quick guide for new users:

Stacks focuses on unlocking a Bitcoin economy. Imagine a Solana-like system but running with BTC as the asset.

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: Stacks mainnet launch was in early 2021 with a Bitcoin-powered consensus mechanism. The project is undergoing a significant upgrade called Stacks Nakamoto, bringing it closer to a Bitcoin L2 (more details below). The builders in the Stacks ecosystem are BTC believers who want to build everything with BTC as the asset.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐁𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝟐𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭: Three primary reasons:

(1) Bitcoin L1 cannot scale to a billion users. We're seeing high BTC L1 fees; they've done a 100x increase, and it becomes hard for average users to pay a $40 fee for a $100 BTC transaction. Fees on L2s can be much cheaper, and they increase the effective bandwidth for Bitcoin. L2s are like building a new highway next to a congested one. 

(2) Bitcoin L2s let developers build any app with BTC that they can build with Ethereum or Solana. Looking at the various non-BTC ecosystems, it's pretty apparent that there are a few use-cases with clear product-market fit, e.g., being able to take stablecoin loans against ETH or SOL or having a native DEX to trade ETH/SOL against stables. Bringing these tried and tested use-cases to BTC is a complete no-brainer.

(3) Bitcoin L2s make L1 tools like DLCs (Discreet Log Contracts) more useful. Users can participate in certain Stacks contracts through DLCs without BTC leaving the L1 chain e.g., participating in a liquidity pool without the BTC leaving the L1. (The BTC only moves to L2 if and when a user gets liquidated.)

𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒: Stacks is a very decentralized ecosystem and Working Groups in the open-source ecosystem have put together some highlights for what to expect in H1 2024.

Some highlights:

(1) The Stacks Nakamoto upgrade is scheduled to launch right before the Bitcoin halving. This will bring fast (5-second) blocks to Stacks, a major improvement over the current 10-30 min blocks tied to Bitcoin L1, and upgrade Stacks security (reorg resistance) budget to 100% of Bitcoin hash power.

(2) sBTC will likely launch as a 2nd hardfork after the Bitcoin halving. This enables "BTC on L2". sBTC is unique as it is secured at the consensus level. There are proposals to use it directly as gas on Stacks. Further, the open network of sBTC signers will likely be the largest and most decentralized set of signers of a Bitcoin L2/peg upon launch (current estimate based on signer library performance and signer interest).

(3) WASM support for Stacks. The ongoing WASM work not only speeds up the execution of Clarity (safe language) contracts but opens the doors for support for potentially other languages like Rust and others.
