Do you think harassment and discrimination aren’t huge problems in STEM fields / academia because you’re not hearing about any cases? All that means is that people are choosing not to tell you, because you are not an ally.
Stop claiming that people who were pressured to leave grad school because of harassment and discrimination did so because they were looking to solve their 2-body problem, didn’t fit in with the dept. culture, or the most common bullsh** explanation, they just couldn’t handle it.
That’s me!! This REU was an awesome experience. I learned a lot, met some incredible scientists, & made some lifelong friends out of many of them! 10/10 would recommend for anyone curious/already passionate about radio astronomy. Feel free to contact me with questions about it!
Are you an astronomy student (undergrad or grad) looking for a summer research opportunity? Check out our Summer Student Research Program offered at three locations around the U.S. The application deadline is Feb 3, 2020.

ugh i am so tired of stories like these. "but we just need to get these girls excited and so they'll major in CS!" is such a tired take; it completely ignores what women have to contend with when they enter the field and have to deal with incompetent tech companies
@abehmard @NOAONorth I think it's worth emphasizing that @NOAONorth not only maintained his status as the REU director, but also had him advise a woman (me) the following year. Even with "training courses," it seems irresponsible to have returned him to an advising role so quickly.
I am very, very angry and disappointed. Attaching a fun letter from him that I got at the end of the summer - I suppose he and @NOAONorth thought that it was enough to make up for everything.
Kenneth Mighell was the REU director again in 2014, and harassed a student who is now also a @Caltech grad student, and a close friend of mine. When we found out, that was a sad bonding experience.
When we finally did, because we did not want future REU cohorts to be subject to him, @NOAONorth ignored us. We didn't ask for him to be fired - we just asked that they choose someone else to be the REU director.
This is very upsetting, and bring back terrible memories. Kenneth Mighell harassed us throughout the entire summer during what was for most of us our first ever research experience in astronomy. We were undergrads, and were very scared to report him.
I kept quiet about this because I assumed that after Kenneth Mighell lost his job at @NOAONorth for reasons NOT related to his sexual harassment and discrimination, he had been unable to get hired anywhere else.
I was looking through the Kepler & K2 Science Conference 2019 conference agenda, and someone who sexually harassed me and my female peers at the 2013 @NOAONorth REU program is presenting a poster there: Kenneth Mighell

In nine years, @NASAKepler discovered that there are #MorePlanetsThanStars. Today, we say farewell to the world-finding space telescope as it passes the torch to @NASA_TESS: https://t.co/IbsBNa5egO
White women kneeling during the anthem to protest “rape culture” is highjacking a movement you took no risks for. You didn’t kneel in solidarity to protest the murder of Black people, don’t co opt & make it about your victimization. That’s white supremacy in the name of feminism.
Harassment has no place in science. That's why we're working on a revocation policy for elected @AAAS Fellows, currently under consideration by the AAAS Council. #MeTooScience
