Inside the @OpenAI vs @elonmusk Drama

What Happened

Let me break down one of tech's biggest breakups in a way that makes sense.

In 2015, OpenAI started with a simple idea: build advanced AI that helps everyone, not just the big tech companies. Elon Musk was there from day one, but it gets interesting here.

As OpenAI started making real progress (like beating pro gamers at Dota 2), they realized something big: this stuff is expensive. Like billions of dollars expensive. They needed serious cash.

This is where things got messy.
Elon had an idea: turn OpenAI into a for-profit company.
Fair enough.
But his terms?
He wanted:

To be CEO
Most of the control
50-60% ownership

His reason was pretty wild - he said he needed $80B for his Mars plans. I'm not making this up.

OpenAI's team freaked out. Their whole point was to ensure no single person could control super-powerful AI.

Now Elon wanted precisely that. See the problem?

When they said no, Elon tried Plan B: "Just merge with Tesla!"

Again, OpenAI wasn't into it.

By 2018, he said, "Get billions in funding right now, or you're done."

Instead of giving in, OpenAI found its way.

They created a "capped-profit" structure in 2019 - a middle ground between non-profit and full corporate.

They even offered Elon some ownership.

He said no.

Fast forward to 2023: Elon started his own AI company, xAI. Then he signed a letter saying everyone (read: OpenAI) should stop developing advanced AI.

Classic ex-move, right?

Here's what's wild about all this:

OpenAI started partly because Elon worried about Google having too much AI power.

Then, he wanted all the power himself.

Now they're competitors.

Both say they're doing it for humanity's benefit.

The real story here isn't about who's right. It's about how even the smartest people disagree on the best way to build something this powerful safely.

Meanwhile, OpenAI released ChatGPT and GPT-4, and Elon is building his own AI. Funny how things work out.
