If European decisionmakers wish to await the outcome of the Istanbul offer, it must be done in the context of a clear threat that any further delay in Russia accepting a ceasefire will trigger additional measures. But it cannot be retroactively framed as the condition for sanctions imposition after the initial threat has lapsed without consequences.

If German and European leaders intend to wait for U.S. alignment before announcing a sanctions package, they should never have issued premature threats they are unwilling to act on, if need be unilaterally.

How can anyone still doubt that the UK now effectively enforces Islamic blasphemy laws, when the Crown Prosecution Service has charged someone for allegedly intending to cause "harassment, alarm, or distress"—not to a person, but to the "religious institution of Islam"?

Although the CPS has since reworded the charge following public outcry, the initial framing reveals far more than it conceals. This was a clear and startling mask slip.

No matter how the state chooses to rebrand it, a law that protects religious ideas from criticism and books from 'desecration' is, by any meaningful definition, a blasphemy law.

If you consider yourself a liberal—especially a progressive, Enlightenment-minded one—and you support prosecutions like this, then you are profoundly confused about the very principles you claim to uphold.

A free, democratic society has no role in telling its citizens which ideas or symbols are sacred. That is the hallmark of theocracy, not liberal democracy.

This must be opposed—clearly, consistently, and without apology.
