I think it was T. Bone Burnett who said that as soon as the companies that run the music industry realized that the people who make music love it so much that they'd do it for free...it was over. All the risk and development costs got pushed onto the artists themselves.

I think that between what Spotify has done to music as a full-time job, what streamers did to Hollywood, and what smartphones in general have done to reading, you can argue that the tech economy is basically destructive to American culture.
