When I discussed quitting Google to do a Phd, my manager, Steve Cheng, gave me the advice of "6 shots": Doing something meaningful usually takes about 5 years and we are productive for roughly 30 years. That gives you 6 attempts. So pick each one carefully and give it your best.

I really like buying and using diagnostic tools. It turns out that there are lots of areas in life where you can gain a lot of certainty if you can just measure something directly. Plus, most of them are relatively inexpensive.

To date, I have:

Geiger counter
Water tester (TDS)
Water chlorine test kit
Moisture sensor (2 scary spikes)
Tiny camera on a long fiber optic tube
Home ultrasound machine
UV measurement gauge
VO2 max measurement device
Lead detection kit
Laser thermometer
CO2 monitor (several)
Air quality monitor
Laser tape measure

Am considering buying tools for measuring EMF radiation and LED flickering but haven’t pulled the trigger on those.

Open to suggestions for more such devices! It’s great just having a toolbox full of these.

Smart friend once told me you should only do a phd if you’re one of the 2:

1. Your family is so rich it doesn’t matter what you do
2. You love studying the subject so much you’d die if you can’t

If not one of the 2, you’re going to have a tough time in grad school.

If you're a smart young person and you really want to go to graduate school, then by all means go. But if you're on the fence, probably don't. That's not where the action is. And it's not where the action is going to be for the foreseeable future.
