1886. Custer County, Nebraska.

Just landed on the claim. Now build a life.

D. Dunn and his family had arrived on the Nebraska prairie with little more than what they could carry.

No finished house waiting.
No established town.
No guarantee the crop would take.

Just a canvas tent, a windmill, children, a few belongings, and the belief that this patch of open ground could become home. The photograph was taken by Solomon D. Butcher, who documented hundreds of Nebraska homesteading families.

Look closely.

There’s even a birdcage hanging inside the tent.

That little detail gets me.

They came west to survive, but survival was never the whole point.

They still wanted beauty.

Companionship.

Something familiar when the prairie felt impossibly large and lonely.

That is what building a life has always been.
Take what you have.

Plant yourself somewhere uncertain.

Work.
Raise the kids.
Make it home.

And trust that someday the empty land behind you will tell a story.

This is alkar wheat grass. We started to plant lots this in sc SD. It goes in wet, poor ground with alkali. In 1-2 years it completely takes over the weeds and becomes 5-6 ft tall. Monster windrows. This 9 acre piece did 61 -1400 lb bales last year. I think we will beat that.
