My takeaway from this course is the value of understanding the theories, history and techniques within Communication. These theories help us understand why people communicate the way they do. It'll help in our interactions with others and communication related work! #UTcommtheory
@DaniHastMedia I completely agree. The course also gave me a lot of fresh perspective. The media can be deceiving, so it was nice to learn about the foundations within communication! I appreciated learning about the number of theories covered. #UTcommtheory
@LillianShermans This was my favorite theory too. I could really apply it in my life and it was nice to become more self aware through learning about it! #UTcommtheory
A favorite theory of mine was the Cognitive Dissonance Theory. I have experienced it in my life and seen it in those around me. Sometimes actions contradict one's thoughts or beliefs. I never knew the name for this until I learned of this theory. It was eye opening! #UTcommtheory
Agenda-Setting is still relevant. Despite the digital age, we can see a lot of agenda setting within the news and this translates over to our social media pages. There are a lot of ads and sponsored videos that push ideas onto us as well through all social media. #UTcommtheory
@Abb6122Abbott This is such a great response. I completely agree. Additionally, we still can see sponsored posts brought outside of the algorithm that may push products or ideas on us. #UTCommtheory
Media shapes peoples opinion on celebrities. For example, there was a lot of negative PR on Haley Bieber during her drama, as well as Taylor Swift for her private jet carbon emissions. https://t.co/YgXdmRdesX #UTcommtheory
@RobbieCommThry This is so true. There is so much false media out there about vaccines. A lot of controversy circled around this on social media, especially TikTok during the Covid era.
@RobbieCommThry Love this! I also used a podcaster for my example. I honestly think these are one of the best kind of parasocial relationships. Yes, it's one sided. However, we are still receiving information, advice, ideas, inspiration, etc. Podcasts are totally beneficial! #UTcommtheory
I have a parasocial relationship with a Podcaster named Lyss. She has a self-help podcast that has helped and inspired me a lot as I navigate my 20's, self-love, relationships, etc. Though she'll never know me, I place time, interest & energy in her content! :) #UTcommtheory
@fordlsophia So true. It is honestly scary and concerning how much wealth & influence these large corporations have. I was shocked and felt a little sick seeing the numbers. #UTcommtheory
I researched Netflix. Interesting fact- the failed company, Blockbuster, turned down a deal to buy Netflix decades ago before Netflix became as big as it is today. & a fun fact- Squid Games is their most watched series to date! #UTcommtheory
Media ownership pov:
Me planning what pictures and videos to post on each of my social media.
I have experienced context collapse by considering the different audiences on different social media. I post accordingly. I am also big on who is viewing my content and the privacy settings. #UTcommtheory
@UTisaiah So true lol. I've accidentally posted things on my main story that were meant for my private story. I've also accidentally posted tiptoes. You're heart really drops for a second in those moments. #UTcommtheory
@DaniHastMedia@UTisaiah I relate to this! It definitely caused an increase in social anxiety. As a former teacher, I also saw this in students coming back after the pandemic. Most students love to be glued to technology now- always asking for iPad time, rather than social interaction. #UTcommtheory
Communication technology negatively impacted our pandemic experience because screen time rose significantly and messed up our previous daily routines. It also led to much isolation and increases in social anxiety/communication. I personally experienced this. #UTcommtheory
I have experienced nonassertive assimilation as a server and a student. I try to remain neutral and develop positive face with everyone I engage with. #UTcommtheory
@Abb6122Abbott Omg, Ive experienced this. When you make a mistake while performing, youre supposed to remain serious. But its hard to not show your shock and embarrassment. #UTcommtheory
