Since 1990, Uzbekistan has nearly halved its maternal mortality ratio. Infant mortality keeps falling too. And 99% of babies are now born with a skilled health worker present. This is real, hard-won progress, and a strong platform to build on.
It was a pleasure connecting with the country's new Minister of Health today, Mr Eldor Adilov. We agreed WHO will help bring international standards of quality of care to hospitals and clinics across the country, and we're looking forward to co-hosting an international conference on maternal and child health in Uzbekistan next year. I also thanked the State Health Insurance Fund for its recent grant to WHO, which will support Uzbekistan's move towards fairer, more efficient healthcare.
WHO has been a partner to Uzbekistan since shortly after independence. As the country marks 35 years of independence next month, we're proud to have walked alongside it for nearly all of that journey.
Good meeting with Dr Asilbek Anvarovich Khudayarov, #Uzbekistan Minister of Health, and his Cabinet and colleagues on the progress of the country’s health system reform to ensure universal health coverage by focusing on primary health care expansion, health workforce development, health insurance strengthening and digital health.
Uzbekistan is also making great progress in cancer control, from early detection of cancer in children and providing all the needed medical and social support, to protecting women’s health through scaling up early detection of breast and cervical cancer.
@WHO is committed to continue supporting the Ministry to deliver on its health sector objectives, including on the ongoing development of Uzbekistan’s 2030 health strategy.
Appreciated the visit to the Family Polyclinic #7 in Uzbekistan’s capital, Tashkent, which reflects the country’s scaling up of primary health care services.
I was especially impressed by the clinic’s use of health data of the communities it serves to categorize groups of people based on their health status, and tailor services to meet their respective needs, from prevention and treatment to pre-natal and maternal care.
I commended the government, and the clinic’s dedicated workforce for their efforts and encouraged them to continue expanding this approach throughout Uzbekistan.
