I think fans still prefer live music for the spectacle. It is expensive to see big artists - cover bands are a more economic option.
New recording technology changed how people perceive live bands since we get used to the recorded sound so the live version sounds odd.

@ThisModernLuke I like your point that new production technology is not always a bad thing - I think that’s important because it is something that can have a negative connotation. I also agree that elements such as improv./skatting within a live performance are a unique experience. #POPMUSW22
@KomranMackey I agree, the advancement of technology makes the sound of a record versus live performance vastly different. Before such technologies, many prefer the original to a cover as the sound was different, now days even original artist cannot match their own recorded sound. #POPMUSW22
@CatalstCat I agree! I don’t think that “schlock” music can be adequately disregarded considering it was consumed at mass. This does not mean that the cover is better than the original - as this is often not the case, but it still holds value within the history of popular music. #POPMUSW22
@DivyaNachnani I agree! Great point in saying that covers lack authenticity. Perhaps the reason why many deem covers as inferior is because cover artists cannot replicate the same genuine emotion portrayed by the original artists who write songs about their personal experiences. #POPMUSW22
“Schlock” music was made to appeal to mass audiences - the songs are often considered lesser quality than originals & do not credit original artists which is unjust. We can value this music for its historical view of cultural appropriation within the industry/society. #POPMUSW22
Ray Charles’ use of a breaking voice technique adds an emotional element to his music & helps relay his feelings to the audience, thereby amplifying the tone of a song. This signifies the importance of techniques used by artists to portray personal expression. #POPMUSW22
@jenna__macinnis Great point! Not only does the use of such vocal techniques express emotion within in a song, but they make the performance feel more genuine and real to the audience. As if we can relate to his feelings - which in turn instills a certain feeling within the listener. #POPMUSW22
@samhedges2019 I agree, vocal techniques can help express the tone of a song without solely relying on the message within the lyrics to convey emotion. It can show an artists passion and how connected they are to their piece - without which many songs would sound much more dull. #POPMUSW2011
@saradwyer0_0 I like the point you make about how playlists that are created and shared via streaming services, act almost as a time capsule of our musical taste during certain periods of our lives. It is a great way to see how our identities evolve over time. #POPMUSW22
@ShaveEmily I completely agree with you - Apple AirPods are a great example of how technology can not only affect the way one listens to music, but also are associated with social status as a symbol of wealth or popularity among peer groups! #POPMUSW22
Streaming services allow access to a broad range of music making it easier to experience genres which otherwise may not be considered. It also leads to selecting from suggested albums/artists listed as similar to music frequently listened to - contributing to identity. #POPMUSW22
@rebeccagnoel I completely agree with you. The portrayal of relationships in media can have adverse effects in real life & create a false image for what is considered a healthy relationship. I also find some songs have very forced rhymes which lead to some bizarre/comical lyrics!

@MarkRus25519380 I agree with your view of popular music being considered "dumbed down". I really like your example of "Pop 101" - I had forgotten about this song, but it is a very well suited reference for this topic!

‘false needs’ in music/other media include good looks, money, luxury items, etc.
I agree that popular music appeals to a passive audience. It often utilizes simple structure & catchy rhythm which may be considered “dumbed-down” compared to other music categories.
