At the 6th Renewable Energy for Sustainable Growth Forum | #RE4SG2026, @GGGI_Rwanda joined energy leaders, policymakers, investors and innovators to discuss what it will take to accelerate Africa’s clean energy transition.
Yesterday, Ms. @UmukunziD, Green Buildings Senior Assistant at GGGI Rwanda, shared our ongoing work to support the development of Rwanda’s Energy Efficiency Strategy (2027–2037).
The revised strategy is being developed in collaboration with @RwandaInfra, with funding from @AFD_France. It comes at an important moment as Rwanda continues to expand energy access and scale up renewable energy deployment and support economic growth. The strategy will provide a framework for managing growing energy demand, strengthening energy security, and advancing energy efficiency across key sectors of the economy, including buildings, transport, industry, agriculture, and energy generation & supply.
@DrBrigitteN, Sustainable Landscape Lead, also moderated a panel on practical approaches to accelerating access to clean cooking solutions. The discussion focused on the barriers that continue to limit adoption, from affordability and last-mile distribution to financing, behavior change and market development, and the partnerships and policy measures needed to translate clean cooking commitments into measurable impact.
Hosted by @epd_rwanda, in partnership with the Ministry of Infrastructure, #RE4SG2026 comes as African countries work to expand electricity access through Mission 300, strengthen energy security, scale renewable energy, advance clean cooking and accelerate electric mobility.
At GGGI, we believe that renewable energy and energy efficiency are complementary pillars of a sustainable energy transition. By working with partners to build energy systems that are efficient, resilient, low-carbon, and inclusive, we support member states in achieving sustainable development while creating new opportunities for green investment and economic growth.

The third chapter of our #10YearsOfPartnership journey takes us into GGGI’s pioneering work in advancing Rwanda’s just and inclusive energy transitions.
In Rwanda, energy use contributes 18% of the country’s 8.7 MtCO₂e emissions, making energy efficiency (EE) central to its NDC 3.0 target of a 53% reduction in GHG emissions by 2035.
As one of the top 20 fastest electrifying countries globally, Rwanda recognizes the climate and economic benefits offered by energy efficiency. Scaling EE could cut emissions by 0.16 million tCO₂ annually, unlock an EE market estimated at USD 70-75 million, manage peak demand, reduce the need for additional power generation, ease fiscal pressure, and lower electricity costs.
Over the past 10 years, @GGGI_Rwanda spearheaded pioneering efforts alongside the Government of Rwanda and partners to catalyze this transition. Working closely with @RwandaInfra, GGGI has supported efforts to strengthen the policy and investment landscape for energy efficiency.

The journey to walk you through our #10YearsOfPartnership begins today...
Today, we spotlight GGGI's work with the Government of Rwanda | @RwandaGov and partners in building greener, more resilient cities and infrastructure.
By 2050, Rwanda envisions that 70% of its population will live in urban areas. As the country continues its journey toward becoming a climate-resilient, middle-income country under the National Strategy for Transformation NST2 (2024–2029) and Vision 2050, green, resilient, and circular cities and infrastructure have never been more important.
Rapid urbanization presents tremendous opportunities, but it also brings growing pressure on land, housing, infrastructure, natural resources, and public services. Building cities that are inclusive, resource-efficient and resilient to climate change requires integrated planning, innovative financing, and close collaboration.
Over the past 10 years, @GGGI_Rwanda has proudly partnered with the Government of Rwanda to help turn these ambitions into action.
Follow this thread to learn more about the milestones that have helped strengthen Rwanda’s commitment to creating cities that are more liveable, resilient and economically competitive.

From vision to impact: Building Rwanda's climate resilience.
Without a land use master plan, development is left to chance.
⏭️For families, it means homes built in high-risk zones are exposed to floods and landslides.
⏭️For businesses, it creates uncertainty, investments that may not survive the next climate shock.
⏭️ For the country, it leads to degraded ecosystems, lost productivity, and a costly cycle of reacting to disasters instead of preventing them.
Through @theGCF Readiness Preparatory Support Project, that story is changing. The project has helped build Rwanda's climate resilience through climate-resilient and integrated District Land Use Plans (DLUPs) for @BureraDistrict and @RutsiroDistrict.
These plans guide how land supports people’s livelihoods, protects ecosystems, and enables sustainable and inclusive socio-economic growth.
Over 1 million people in Burera and Rutsiro districts are expected to gain improved access to basic services, climate-resilient infrastructure, planned settlements, and productive land use that supports economic growth and job creation.
The Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness and Preparatory Support Project was implemented by @GGGI_Rwanda in partnership with @EnvironmentRw, @REMA_Rwanda, and @Lands_Rwanda.

Shedding light on the Rwandan concept of UBWENGE, which racists are manipulating and distorting.
Supporters of Congolese General Sylvain Ekenge are relentlessly attacking him on social media, attempting to exonerate him for his hate speech targeting the Tutsi ethnic group, which he delivered publicly on DRC state television in his capacity as spokesperson for the FARDC (Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo). To this end, racists are deliberately distorting the Rwandan cultural concept of UBWENGE, which signifies intelligence in Rwandan custom and tradition, giving it a negative connotation, suggesting that Rwandans use the notion of UBWENGE to lie. This is the same lie that was spread a few years ago by the infamous French denier Pierre Péan. These racists supporting General Ekenge are falsely claiming that UBWENGE in Rwandan custom signifies malice or hypocrisy, which is fundamentally untrue. Malice and hypocrisy have their meaning "uburyarya, uburiganya", never ubwenge in that sense.
Ubwenge is a positive value in our culture that educates children from a young age towards supreme intelligence and brilliance above all else. Rwandans express this positive value of Ubwenge in numerous proverbs, five of which I will mention below:
1) Ubwenge buheze mu nda burabora = Intelligence kept in the belly rots. Meaning: Possessing knowledge alone, or expertise in a particular field without sharing it with others, is a sterile acquisition. Only what is shared germinates and bears fruit.
2) Ubwenge burarahurwa = Knowledge is acquired through training and observation.
3) Ubwenge buva hasi = Intelligence starts from the ground up. This Rwandan proverb is the equivalent of another well-known French proverb that Belgians taught us in secondary school: "Aux âmes bien nées, la valeur n’attend pas le nombre des années= To noble souls, worth does not wait for the number of years."
4) Ubwenge bw’umwe buratuba = The intelligence of one person alone is always insufficient. Its equivalent in French is "Du choc des idées jaillit la lumière" (From the clash of ideas springs light).
5) Ubwenge si ubugingo, umupfumu ntiyapfuye = Intelligence is not health, otherwise the diviner would not die. This means that no human means, not even those of diviners or doctors whom people believe to be all-knowing, can ever overcome death. Diviners and doctors are all subject to the implacable law of death. This is what is said in the Rwandan language, "Imbere y’urupfu twese turareshya" (Before death, we are all equal).
May these examples help people of good faith not to succumb to imposters who, in order to spread their anti-Rwandan hatred, fabricate lies about the concept of UBWENGE, distorting its meaning for hateful and denialist purposes.
Happy end of 2025 and happy new year 2026.
