The fastest way to lower standards is to rescue people from the consequences of missing them.

The leaders who drive the highest performance are the ones willing to let the discomfort of subpar work do its job instead of rushing in to fix it. They’re willing to hold tension on purpose.

Tension is discomfort in an interpersonal relationship that arises as a result of a difference in expectations, values, or perspectives.

Here's the pattern that kills accountability: an employee misses a target. Instead of holding the tension and letting the consequence land, the leader steps in, absorbs the problem, and solves it themselves.

Message received by the team: there are no real stakes for poor work here.

Creating tension and being an asshole are two different things. 

You don't need to be volatile. You need to be clear, stay direct, and be willing to sit in the discomfort until your team rises to meet it.

That's what real leverage looks like.
