I've work as a software engineer for over twenty years. My last 4 1/2 years were spent at Microsoft. Tens of thousands of other MSFT employees have been laid off over the past several years.

HR bots will now consistently throw my resume in the discard pile. I can't tell if this is because of my age, my skin color, my country of origin, or my "lack of skills".

If the purpose of government is to encourage the prosperity of it's citizens, then why are the livelihoods of current and naturalized US citizens _not_ taken into consideration first?

H1B visas are just on of many policies which steal wages from workers.

Out of the people I worked closely with and admired.

Pakistani national H1B - laid off
Egyptian national offshore- laid off
Many Chinese national H1Bs - laid off
Bangladeshi national who was naturalized - scared but still there

This is anecdotal, of course. But it would be naive to say that H1B visa hiring is consistently "above board" and "meritorious"

I have been both hired and fired by committee at Microsoft.

I have worked with MSFT H1Bs onshore and with offshore MSFT engineers in India and China.

I speak from experience when I say that you cannot treat software engineers as infinitely replaceable cogs.

I have been forced to hand projects to teams overseas, set alarms at 3am to hold their hands, and then it all got dumped back on my lap when it wasn't able to launch.
