(Thread) I have been trying to understand the root causes of human-induced ecological and climate breakdown, and have written several essays about the systemic problems and drivers. I am collecting them here:
'In our interpretation, aerosol climate forcing grew (became more negative by about 0.5 W/m2) during the period of rapid global warming (1970-2005), which implies a high climate sensitivity (4.5°C ± 0.5°C) for best agreement with warming of the past two centuries."
Incredible new study of annual mass change for EACH world's glacier from 1976 to 2024! 😲💪
Since 1976, glaciers have lost 9179 Gt of water
= 25.3 mm MSL rise!
41 % (10 mm) occurred in the last decade
6 % (1.5 mm) occurred in the single record year 2023!

I wrote about a Senate hearing yesterday featuring our aspiring AI overlords, who promise an “almost unimaginably bright” future while making the present shitty
@dwallacewells Ha, reminds me of 'Customer Lifetime Value', which naturally refers to the (monetary) value extracted from the customer, rather than the value provided to them
They really think that they are the only essential human agents and the rest of us are disposable. A stunning and virulent delusion. The enemies of society now rule it.
Since the first Earth Day, the world has produced 3 times as much CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels than it had in its entire industrial history up to that point.
Atmospheric CO2 usually peaks around May each year. Yet the most recent weekly average at Mauna Loa has already set a record: The highest it’s been for the last 800,000 years, at 430ppm.
Remarkable how moving uni classes online during COVID was seen as unacceptably watering down the learning experience, but replacing faculty with AI is now being cast as an enlightening inevitability
Measles cases in Ontario have passed 900 so far in 2025, far exceeding the annual totals recorded over the past decade.
The measles vaccine is highly effective at preventing infection, widely available at no cost, and backed by decades of safety data.
Across Europe, regional sea levels are rising at an average rate of 2–4 mm per year. Mean sea level change is a critical indicator of climate change.
The visualization by @NASA shows changes using the metaphor of a submerged porthole.

People are used to trend lines that go "up" in climate-related graphs, so they may not appreciate how significant this is. Yes, temperature is increasing, and CO2 is increasing. But this is the *annual growth rate of CO2*. Even if the line was FLAT, CO2 would still be increasing!
2025 global temperatures are expected to stay at or above 2024’s record levels, reinforcing that climate sensitivity and aerosol forcing have likely been underestimated. See 15 Apr - 2025 Global Temperature - https://t.co/3rNcEsFybd
