Huge congratulations to @jovheather on a successful defense of her MSc work looking at ecosystem-level effects of Venlafaxine on aquatic systems! The twiterless Mark Hanson and I are very proud advisors today! Awesome work!
@Ologies@pitrod He researches environmental risk assessment and the effects of oil spills, pharmaceuticals, tire additives (etc!) on freshwater aquatic ecosystems, using a whole-ecosystem approach
@pitrod@Mr_AdamScott I am so grateful for or all your help Pepe, and the support of the @IISD_ELA team!! 2 years in a row, I cannot believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@moira_ijzerman@pitrod Thanks!! Yes you do see emergence traps! I talk about them a bit more in my presentation video, but in short there weren’t any significant trends with emergent insects. Thanks for your q!

@scisally@pitrod Environmentally relevant concentrations range from ~100 ng/L to over 3,000 ng/L. The half life is approximately 5 days, which was assessed in the pilot study for this project! Thanks so much for your interest!
@scisally Unfortunately though, it isn’t the most quantitative way to assess behaviour- more of a qualitative/anecdotal assessment that I will use to back up a much more standardized lab assay in the future (provided we see a similar trend!)
@scisally Hello! Thanks for your q! Yes it refers to sightings (check the alt text for breakdown). We tried to be as consistent as possible - eg, not looking for fish, just noticing what was there while we were sampling, only recording more than one if we saw them together, etc…
I can make the preliminary assessment that venlafaxine at current environmentally relevant concentrations does not appear to pose a significant ecological risk to aquatic ecosystems. Stay tuned to my page for more research updates! (18/18)
