HMG should seek an agreement with @kimleadbeater that if she pauses her bill they will bring proposals forward in Government time...
BUT only after proper pre-legislative scrutiny and consideration has taken place.
As others have said, this feels ripe for a Royal Commission /2
Nikki & @thetimes are absolutely right on this. Whatever your views on the principle of assisted dying, this - a Private Members Bill - is not the right way to do it. Matters of such social importance need proper consideration and scrutiny. 1/
.@thetimes view today: “Problems with the assisted dying bill are now sufficiently concerning that the process needs to be paused or slowed down…any MP wavering about the assisted dying bill should side with caution and vote it down…has been a shoddy and unedifying process” 1/
.@RishiSunak The Zoological Society of London Bill would ensure we can continue to protect nature. It's nearly completed its passage through Parliament. It can pass with your support. Don't miss this opportunity to support British science and conservation please support our bill.
Commons procedure on opposition days is different to usual. This makes selection of amdts especially tricky.
If Speaker selects Labour amendment, SNP almost certainly denied chance to vote on own motion.
If selects govt amendment, Labour very likely can't vote on theirs.
🧵
@GavinBarwell@keiranpedley@NikkidaC That's basically it. For OpDays, the main (in this case the opposition) motion is voted on first before any amendments are considered. The idea being that the govt *has* to respond directly to the concerns raised by the opposition & allows the opposition to test the House
It is 1 year today (10/5) since the Queen's Speech, so in our latest briefing @RuthFox01 & @Brigid_Fowler take a look at the state of the Government's programme. #legislativelogjam https://t.co/23fyeAo13x
@AdamNewson@natbabyshower Yep, very delayed on items being sent. Seems like they don’t carry stock and reply on other couriers etc, which are often late. Pretty poor.
The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.
🧵Congratulations to @PennyMordaunt on her appointment as @CommonsLeader. I've not seen confirmation but I assume, given the early(ish) announcement, that Cabinet rank status has been restored. If so, good. The role should never have been downgraded. 1/
