@PhillipsPOBrien Future production capabilities can help Ukraine in persuading partners to deliver from stocks and swap later. Also, by 2028 Ukraine could likely have it's own domestic ballistic missile interceptors.
@KShevchenkoReal There is the off-budget European Peace Facility on top of whatever comes from the Multiannual Financial Framework. Plus immobilised RU assets.
Twelve years ago, on April 13, 2014, the first blood of the war in Donbas was spilled. A group of Russian special forces led by Igor Girkin ambushed a vehicle of the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), killing Captain Hennadiy Bilichenko.
Ukrainian side had orders “not to respond to provocations.”
It was Palm Sunday. Girkin reported to his superiors in Moscow that he had “chopped up someone important.” He used the word “chopped up,” as if it was piece of meat, not humans
His superiors (in the person of the future founder of “Donetsk People’s Republic”, Alexander Boroday) congratulated him: “Well done marking the holy day!”
It was all verbatim on a phone intercept published online on 15.04.2014.
These two Russians knew they were starting a war. They thought that “chopping up” a person was an excellent way to celebrate a holy day.
In essence, this is all you need to know about the people who brought war to Ukraine in 2014.
12 years ago: The day Russia triggered the war in Donbas
Exactly 12 years ago, on April 12, 2014, Russian paramilitary groups led by FSB officer Igor Girkin (Strelkov) crossed the border and seized the city of Sloviansk, marking the start of the armed occupation of the Donetsk region.
🚩 The myth of "civil war"
Russia has spent years claiming the war in Donbas was a local "uprising." However, Girkin himself later admitted in interviews: "I was the one who pulled the trigger of war. If our unit hadn’t crossed the border, it would have all ended like it did in Kharkiv or Odesa."
⛏️ Rule by terror
In his own admissions, Girkin revealed that there was no widespread desire to join Russia among the local population. To maintain control and "discipline," his units resorted to extrajudicial killings. He openly stated that they had to execute local civilians and residents to intimidate others and suppress any dissent.
🩸 The price of occupation
What started 12 years ago with a small armed group has turned into the largest conflict in Europe since WWII. The "liberation" Girkin brought was nothing more than blood, fear, and the forced mobilization of the very people he claimed to be "protecting."
Today, Girkin is in a Russian prison—not for his war crimes in Ukraine, but for being "not radical enough" for the Kremlin. A fitting end for a terrorist used and discarded by his own masters.
4 years ago today, Bucha was liberated. To this day, some people wonder why Ukrainians don't surrender, concede territory, and pursue “peace”. The answer is starkly simple: Russian occupation brings brutal torture, rape, and killings.
So, the US, which gave Ukraine a security guarantee when it gave up its nukes after the collapse of the Soviet Union, is telling Ukraine it will give it a security guarantee if it surrenders to Russia, which also gave Ukraine a security guarantee before it invaded Ukraine. Nuts.
People easily forget what Robert Mueller was tasked with investigating: evidence of conspiracy and obstruction of justice.
In the course of that investigation, a dozen GRU officers attached to Unit 26165 were indicted, as were Yevgeny Prigozhin, two of his shell companies, and a dozen of his troll farm employees. The charges leveled against these Russians were conspiracy to commit offenses against, or defraud, the United States, identity theft, money laundering and wire and bank fraud.
The Mueller investigation wasn't, properly speaking, a counterintelligence investigation.
That work fell to the Republican-led Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI), which released its conclusions in five different volumes beginning in July 2019, far more comprehensive and detailed than the Mueller Report, although they individually and collectively garnered a fraction of the attention.
"No probe into this matter has been more exhaustive," said the acting SSCI head in August 2020, when the fifth and final volume was released. He was right and deserves a lot of credit in getting to the bottom of Russian active measures and election interference in the 2016 presidential contest.
His name was Marco Rubio.
Trump is not threatening NATO/Europe because it’s not coming to the rescue in Hormuz. he’s been doing so consistently (Ukraine, Greenland) because it’s what he believes. Trump is predictable on Europe. The problem is the European lack of consistency in acknowledging US betrayal
Looking at Donald Trump pushing the world economy into the abyss and incoherently conducting a senseless war, it is impossible not to think of the well known Shakespeare quotation : “It is a tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”. Macbeth.
"My father survived Russian captivity, but his heart gave out."
Ukrainian marine Oleksandr Savov died eight months after surviving nearly three years of Russian torture. Today marks one year since the release he did not live to commemorate.
He took the greatest military force in world history, lost a war to a middle power in a week, begged the world to save him, and demanded that the media lie about this and everything else. I try, but at a simple human level I do not see how anyone can mistake this man’s almost supernatural weakness for strength. His weakness is something negative, gravitational, so deep that it can draw in a whole country. But only if we fail to see it. Only if we let it.
