Happy New Year! @janhasbrouck@lauricoop@amy_fleisher
Great paper from @amandavande1 & @burnsmk1: “Four Screening Myths that Cause More Harm than Good in Preventing Reading Failure & What You Can Do Instead”
“MYTH 1: More Screening Can Only Improve Correct Identification of Students With Dyslexia”
Looking at you, #OklaEd#OklaLeg.
@amandavande1@ehanford We need to get the science of math instruction to teachers now. Teachers need the information on the real science and not what they hear from popular “thought leaders.”
Targeting student motivation or ways to help students organize their work & work harder, is not the right solution & will only worsen gaps. Making sure ALL have access to science-backed core instruction in reading, writing, & math (& making sure all students grow) is key.
And math! Average grad rate for 4-year degree (NCES) is 60% in 6 years. Major risk factor for not finishing: taking remedial math. Koon’s (2019) excellent study showing access to rigorous course sequences in HS is not sufficient. Children have to have the skills to benefit.
How do you teach kids to read? What's worked for you? What do you still have questions about? Join a conversation with reading experts and teachers hosted on The Seattle Times. You can find resources and hear about other people's experiences. https://t.co/oU4zRUKvbw
I am honored to be part of this important conversation with the readers of the Seattle Times' @educationlab along with @janhasbrouck@juliebedell and Dawn Brookhart .
Is there such a thing as a perfect reading program? The 🔑 is teacher knowledge. “Just handing teachers materials or a program or a curriculum is not going to do the job,” says TRL’s @drheidibc. Read more: https://t.co/GLyMxwRErG
Emily Hanford’s talk @reading_league conference is EXCELLENT (of course). She just said the KEY is understanding reading is understanding orthographic mapping!👍 #TRLConf2019
So PROUD to be part of ReadWA! Continuing the work of @reading_league and @ehanford
