Safety-net hospitals provide essential care for underserved communities. Despite multiple policies designed to support them, they are chronically underfunded. Why?

In this @washingtonpost OpEd, we, four Black women physicians, pay honor to the humanity of Dr. Susan Moore, who died prematurely of #COVID19 and racism, and we continue to call on institutions and organizations to dismantle racism in healthcare. #SayHerName
It's 2020.
Words matter.
I hope to use my privilege and platform to change the way we discuss health inequities (while I stand on the shoulders of giants who have been in the trenches of this work).
Following is a 🧵on #RacismNotRace#MedCrit#MedTwitter
1/ The Scope stands with protesters in the fight against police brutality, systemic racism against the black community, and economic injustice. Academic medicine remains subject to racist theory that historically oppressed the black community and persists to the present day
If you don't quite understand what horror the Trump administration inflicted today on transgender and non-binary people seeking medical care and why we're scared, let me tell you a quick story.
[TW: transphobia, trans death]
(thread)
#MedTwitter A thread of books on race, health, and the horrific history of medicine that go beyond typical #meded curric, which often only covers Tuskegee (& maybe Henrietta Lacks). Organized by medical specialties (so find what speaks to you!) and (almost all) by Black authors.
Interns should absolutely NOT know more than their attendings about potentially lethal medical issues. Racism is that issue. Confused? Read my piece: https://t.co/R4LR3EnA1V
The AAP condemns racism of all forms, and notes that even vicarious racism – witnessed through social media, conversations with friends or family, or media images – harms children’s health.
1 in 1000 Black men and boys will be killed by police in their lifetime.
1 in 1000 is also the mortality rate of measles, a risk deemed so deadly, it has near constant public health surveillance and prevention.
That we don't treat police violence the same is a form of racism.
Solidarity with our brothers and sisters protesting against injustice. As medical professionals who combat the social determinants of health (caused by structural racism) everyday, we need to support our brave comrades who are fighting to change the structure. #BlackLivesMatter
I said this in 2016 in Pediatrics, the Journal of @AmerAcadPeds.
Police violence harms kids. It is a form of community violence and witnessed violence that disrupts the health, development, and core relationships children and youth rely on to thrive.

The torture and murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the horrific display of racism and intentional endangerment in Central Park this past week were not aberrations or unfortunate misunderstandings. #RacismIsAPublicHealthCrisis
#MedTwitter Here's a list of #JusticeForGeorge efforts to donate to, medtwitter people to follow, petitions to sign, and protests to participate in as healthcare workers. Right now fairly NYC specific and working to expand. Please help add and share!

This is GAME CHANGER. Abbott to market, starting next week, a fast point-of-care #coronavirus test, delivering positive results in 5min and negative results in 13min. Will deliver 50K tests/day to start. Kudos to Abbott and FDA’s Jeff Shuren and team at CDRH who are in the fight.

Last Sunday afternoon, I was riding in the car with my 12-year-old son. Just us 2, riding to our (super casual) church. And talking about his first week of school.
Best part: Seeing his friends.
Worst part: Having to wake up early again.
All of it was super normal.
Yup.
