Land governance challenges require solutions that respond to the realities communities face every day. During #LAW2026, Hon. Justice Lawrence Tweyanze, High Court Judge in Kasese, highlighted issues coming before the courts, including absentee landlords, mineral claims, environmental degradation, population pressure, inheritance and will writing, as well as conflicts arising from encroachment on public land, railway reserves and water areas.

He also pointed to tensions between communities and government agencies where development projects are undertaken without adequate engagement with landowners. These issues underscore the importance of dialogue, awareness and secure land rights in promoting productive and sustainable land use.

Hon. Justice Tweyanze warmly welcomed the Land Awareness Week activities and officially flagged off the teams to take the land rights awareness campaign across the region.

The Prime Minister of Businga bwa Rwenzururu has expressed the kingdom’s appreciation to government and partners for coming together to address pressing land issues across the Rwenzori region.

He welcomed the continued engagement with communities and stakeholders, pledging the kingdom’s support towards efforts that promote secure land rights, sustainable land use and peaceful resolution of land-related challenges.

Speaking at #LAW2026, Dennis Obbo from the @ministry_lands highlighted government’s commitment to addressing key land governance challenges, including unregistered customary land, land grabbing, environmental degradation, land fragmentation, encroachment on government land and human-wildlife conflicts.

He also emphasised the role of traditional leaders in land dispute mediation and shared government’s plan to support the issuance of 1,000 certificates of customary ownership for family land per district across 10 districts.

Now in its 10th edition, Land Awareness Week continues to provide a platform for communities, leaders and stakeholders to engage on practical solutions for secure, sustainable and inclusive land governance.

In his opening remarks, at the Kasese Multipurpose Grounds, James Cleto Mumbere, Program Manager – Advocacy at @pelum_uganda, has called for responsive, transparent and accountable land governance that protects the rights and interests of communities.

He emphasised the need to safeguard customary landowners, protect forests, fragile ecosystems and the wider environment, while ensuring women and children have a meaningful voice in land ownership and decision-making.

For the Rwenzori region, the vision is clear: protective agriculture, sustainable tourism and an inclusive environment, built on secure land rights and responsible land governance. 🌱🏞️

THE 10TH LAND AWARENESS WEEK IS OFFICIALLY UNDERWAY! 🌱🏡

We kicked off #LandAwarenessWeek2026 last evening in Kasese with a radio talk show on Kasese Guide Radio, bringing together voices from government, civil society and farming communities to discuss land rights and the issues affecting communities in the Rwenzori Region.

The conversation featured Denis Obbo from the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, James Cleto from PELUM Uganda, James Maluku Muserero, Senior Land Management Officer – Kasese, and Abel from WASHIRIKA Farmers. The discussion set the stage for a week of community dialogues, legal aid, accountability engagements and conversations on secure and productive land use.

Today, we take the conversation to the community. 📍 Our starting venue for Day 1 is the Kasese Multipurpose Hall grounds, from 8:00 AM. Join us as we bring land rights conversations closer to the people.
