Adani has won the bid, not to build a new highway, but to collect tolls for 30 years on NH-38, the stretch between Trichy and Madurai, spanning approximately 124 km.

This stretch includes two toll plazas: Boothakudi and Chittampatti. The highway was constructed in 2010, and toll operations began on 24th May 2013, as per the NHAI portal.

The construction cost was ₹419 crore. However, by November 2024, toll collections have already reached ₹1,202 crore—averaging around ₹104 crore annually. The cost of construction has long been recovered, paid for by the public. Now, with the new 30-year contract awarded to Adani, toll collections are projected to range between ₹5,000-₹7,000 crore, considering current traffic levels and an annual toll hike of 5%.

And yet, we continue to pay the government for a road whose cost, along with interest, has already been recovered. Remember @nitin_gadkari’s famous mantra: “If you want good roads, you’ve to pay.” But surely, there should be a limit to this loot, no?
