The Columbia disaster is the story behind Jeff Bezos banning PowerPoint at Amazon

While Columbia was in orbit in 2003, engineers assessed the damage from a foam strike on its wing. Then, they presented the results as PowerPoint slides.

The key slide from that presentation is famous now. Its headline said that the test data indicated "conservatism". The real truth was below, in the smallest nested bullets. The real foam piece was 640 times bigger than anything the model had been tested on. And minor variations in energy could cause significant damage.

The reassurance traveled up, but the risk stayed buried inside small text. As we all know now, Columbia broke apart on re-entry. The investigation board blamed NASA's slide culture after that event.

Bezos saw the same pattern in business decks. Confident headlines, resting on hidden flaws. In 2004 he decided to ban PowerPoint at Amazon. Presentations were replaced with a six-page memo, written as full narrative text.

So now at Amazon, every meeting starts in silence, with the room reading the memo for about half an hour. Then the discussion begins, and everyone has read the thing they are deciding on.

The reason is what slides do to thinking. Bullet points let a weak argument hide behind confident formatting. Full sentences expose it. If the logic has a gap, the paragraph shows it.

A great six-page memo takes a week or more. It gets written, shared with colleagues, set aside for days, and rewritten with a fresh mind. The best ones, Bezos says, read with "the clarity of angels singing."

This is the same thing we do with RFCs in our process. Our team always do it before any significant decision, as this make more clarity to everyone, but stays as a doc for the future.

@coinbureau CO2 emissions are not "permitted" in the USA. We only regulate hazardous chemical species here, like SO2+NOx. We also prefer to separate Church and State here. To require permitting of CO2 we'd have to adopt the religious beliefs of the EU. One day perhaps, but not today.

ALERT: California “billionaire-backed” city facing backlash after city officials refused to meet with a company planning on building a $3.2 billion port and are now moving to Texas.

Saronic Technologies, an Austin-based defense contractor, was planning on building “Port Alpha,” an autonomous shipyard, in Solano County but has now switched to Brownsville, Texas.

Saronic, whose port is projected to bring in 10,000 jobs, sent executives to Solano, but state Senator Christopher Cabaldon and the Solano County Board of Supervisors refused to meet with the company.

Vacaville Mayor John Carli torched the officials, saying, “What a profound dereliction of duty. You don’t win 10,000 jobs by insulting the company bringing them. Solano County deserves leaders who fight to open doors, not lock them from the inside.”

California Forever, backed by Silicon Valley heavyweights and Jan Sramek, was blamed by Cabaldon because they “held the shipyard proposal hostage by tying it to their unpopular housing development proposal.”
