🚨A shameful tactic used by deceitful Rajputs to rob innocent people!
The French traveller Louis Rousselet, using the example of the Rajput (Thakur) of Tintoui, who paid Chauth to the Marathas, says that the Rajputs (Thakurs) were some of the biggest robbers. A large part of their income came from looting trading caravans that passed through their territories.
Instead of ending this system of robbery, the British government merely limited and regulated it. The Thakurs stopped being robbers of caravans and became their "protectors." Instead of looting them, they began collecting a tax from them.
Whenever a trading caravan entered the territory of a Thakur, it had to pay a fixed percentage of the value of its goods as a fee. In return, the Thakur promised the caravan safe passage through his territory.
But if a caravan trusted its own strength and travelled without buying this protection, it was certain to be attacked and robbed. The attack was carried out by different groups of robbers. These groups had been warned in advance by their leader. That leader was the same Thakur.
After the robbery, the same Thakur acted like a magistrate. He listened to the victims' complaints, recorded them in a very formal manner, and sent his soldiers to search for the robbers.
But the search always failed. The soldiers returned without catching anyone. The Thakur then told the merchants that they had made a big mistake by refusing to accept his protection.
So, you can see how deceitful Rajputs robbed innocent people through this shameful tactic.
