@HFDCathedral's Cathedral's Mappa Mundi- The Mappa Mundi is one of the world’s most exceptional #medievaltreasures, and we are fortunate enough to have this right on our doorstep. It is not only a crucially unique part of Herefordshire’s Heritage, but Britain’s too.@HerefordHour2
@HFDCathedral's Chained Library- A chained #library was a theft prevention tactic used between the #middleages to approximately the beginning of the nineteenth century.
@HerefordHour2
The system allowed people to read the book within the library itself, attached to a chain to avoid loss of materials. Hereford Chained Library is the world’s largest surviving library of it’s kind, with all of the chains, rods and locks still fully intact. @HerefordHour2
It is believed to be the largest #medieval#map that has withstood the test of time and remains complete. It is without a doubt, absolutely fascinating to see. @HerefordHour2
Made in what scholars believe to be the early 1300’s, the map is constructed on a large single sheet of vellum (cow’s skin). It #illustrates the #geographical, #historic and #spiritualbeliefs of Christianity in the thirteen and fourteenth centuries.

The present building was begun in 1079 & the site had been used as a place of #worship prior to this- rather remarkable. The building boasts some of the most impressive examples of #Norman#architecture to date.
