This morning Israeli snipers shot and killed my two family friends in an attack on the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza.
Nahida (Um Emad Anton) and Samar, mother and daughter, were walking to the Sisters’ Convent to use the only bathroom.
One was killed as she tried to carry the other to safety. Their bodies remain strewn across the church courtyard.
The water tanks and solar panels were also struck. We don’t know if they have enough water to survive.
The Christian community in Gaza is on the verge of extinction.
There are about 800 of us left, some sheltering in the Catholic church, some in the Orthodox church, and a few still in their homes in Gaza City.
There are approximately 530 Christians inside the Holy Family, 60 per cent are women and children.
My family has been sheltered there since St. Porphyrius Orthodox Church was bombed and my cousin was murdered.
This is a targeted death campaign during the Christmas season on the world’s oldest Christian community.
Earlier this morning, an Israeli tank fired on the Convent of the Sisters of Mother Theresa. The convent housed ~54 people with disabilities. The generator was destroyed, taking out electricity. Then two more shells were fired completely destroying the convent. Many of these people are now without the respirators they need to survive.
The Red Cross has submitted a request to the Pope for urgent intervention.
Also just to add a note of humility to what I've been writing for the past few days: I don't know what the fuck is going on, no one does, we're all trying to figure this out in real time. Covered this region for a decade and a half, cannot remember a time everyone was so confused
Strategically, killing civilians in Gaza who aren’t Hamas won’t hurt Hamas, it’ll help them, in the long-run.
Morally, killing civilians in Gaza as part of an ‘overwhelming’ show of force isn’t moral. It’s immoral.
When I was a little boy, the Japanese military attacked Pearl Harbor. It was a surprise attack, and thousands of U.S. servicemembers perished. As a nation, we were stunned. And we vowed to strike back. Revenge was understandably on everyone’s mind, including many Americans of Japanese descent who opposed the emperor and were peaceful and law-abiding U.S. citizens and residents.
In its zeal to exact that revenge, however, the U.S. government overreacted, out of fear and bigotry. They targeted everyone who happened to look like the people who had carried out the attack. Those of us who had done nothing wrong were forced to pay the consequences for the decisions of others far away and disconnected from us. We were interned for years, in open-air prisons, while America went off to fight Japan, Germany and Italy.
It’s so important that we carry the lessons of the past through to today. Merely because one group commits atrocities and acts with depravity does not mean vast hundreds of thousands or even millions of others should be lumped together with them and made to suffer. We must never paint with the brush of justice and retaliation too broadly, or the toll of human suffering will rise immeasurably.

Some folks who saw my email signature commented on it, so I wanted to share. The US is the only developed nation w/o subsidized childcare. Adding it would increase our GDP over 1 trillion dollars. Not a handout — it’s a smart decision when facing a recession and labor shortages.
