@BecomingDataSci Great point! The scientific method is all about making your best guess then trying like hell to prove that guess wrong and iterating. Very different from math where you work to prove something right. Data science is all about applying scientific thinking to various fields.
@ergestx A data model, particularly in a source system, represents a set of rules for how we interpret reality. It controls the information we capture about events. This lens impacts the insights that come from the data it produces. Same concept goes downstream in a less direct manner.
@WeHateData Not a lukewarm take at all. The most important aspect of working as a data person is helping others understand what questions they should be asking and how to ask them. Otherwise you just have a really expensive SQL author.
@CMastication Cleopatra lived closer to the release of the iphone than the construction of the pyramids. The T-Rex existed closer in time to humans than it did to the stegosaurus. Time is wild.
@matthew_barlowe Being able to Google something and then apply the search results to your specific problem is easily the most valuable skill in software and analytics (and probably lots of other industries as well)
Recently came across a company promising their proprietary AI powered COVID detector finds 100% of positive cases. To anyone buying what they are selling I will gladly deliver you that performance for half the price, whatever they charge, no questions asked.
@sarahcat21 Every data project I do starts with the null hypothesis that the analysis/exploration will provide no business value. Only once the analysis/exploration provides enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis do I start worrying about engineering best practices and optomizations
@johnvharkins It's like the old board game Mastermind, but the solution is a word. If you play it and never ever post about it on social media it provides about five minutes of relaxing entertainment a day.
