Forced return to Eritrea is a death sentence for these refugees, we call to Egyption authorities must stop that actions, especially those currently held in detention. Registration cards should prevent forced return and arbitrary detention. Why are registered Eritreans still being swept up in these arrests? UNHCR needs to address the breakdown of protection protocols with the Egyptian authorities. Protection from  forced return, arbitrary arrest, and detention is exactly what UN registration is supposed to provide. When this fails, the entire international refugee protection system is undermined. Egypt must honor the UN mandate. #BlueRevolution

As a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, Egypt has a legal and moral obligation to protect those fleeing persecution. The reports of systematic abuse against Eritrean refugees suggest a grave failure to uphold these international standards. We urge the Egyptian Ministry of Interior to grant independent human rights observers and legal counsel immediate access to all detention centers where Eritreans are being held. Transparency is the first step toward justice and ending abuse.
