@msjade1010 @DrPorcher HI! I agree with you!! Healthy teacher student relationships are so important. But they should be built of off one on one interactions rather than assuming. #teacheredumatters#ELE301#TCNJEduLions
@DrPorcher I feel like as a future educator and being White, I need to feel responsible to help change and disrupt the norms. I feel like I need to continue conversing, learning, and teaching my future students not only history but what’s right. #teacheredumatters#ELE301#TCNJEduLions
@BaltzisMs @DrPorcher Hi! Anti-Blackness is everywhere. “Standard” English is still used as the “gold standard” and (it’s been time), but it’s definitely time to sway away from this idea. #teacheredumatters#ELE301#TCNJEduLions
@miss_rosofsky @DrPorcher @dr_s_bertrand @aprilbakerbell Hi Chloe! @aprilbakerbell has very informing presentations. We also review her work in our class! I agree, the use of Black English and getting rid of code switching should be discussed way more. #teacheredumatters#ELE302#TCNJEduLions
@DrPorcher I feel like anti-Blackness woven into our own understanding stems from being unaware. Unaware of language, discrimination, policies, issues. Unaware of everything. To become more aware, we just need to keep learning and talking! #teacheredumatters#ELE301#TCNJEduLions
@DrPorcher @dr_s_bertrand Hey everyone! My name is Mackenna Kerrick. I attend University of Delaware majoring in Elementary Education with aSpecial Education concentration. I also have a Race, Culture, and Equity in Education Minor. I can’t wait to meet everyone and hear your thoughts! #teacheredumatters
I feel the word “guidelines” is adding to the stigma that we are trying to sway away from. So, I would take that word out to not make it seem like there is only one correct structure of language and one can be incorrect if such “guidelines” aren’t followed. #teacheredumatters
@bluehenraye @DrPorcher Hi! I agree. Everyone can be their true authentic self. It would also be less intimidating for everyone. People will no longer judge because they are intimidated by others language and others will not feel judged for not using mainstream English. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher A linguistically free world would feel freeing for everyone, but especially those who don’t speak mainstream English. They would not get stereotyped in any way and everyone could be their authentic self by speaking however they want, without the judgment. #teacheredumatters
@MccloskeyJemini @DrPorcher I agree! English should be seen as diverse rather than there only being one way to speak it. Just because one speaks what is not known as “standard” or “formal” does not make them illiterate or wrong. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher I can ensure this by recognizing the diversity and differences between everyone around me. The diversity brings different languages as well as perspectives. It is important to recognize this and find the beauty instead of judging, that way no harm is caused. #teacheredumatters
@CameronVeazey02 @DrPorcher My “mother’s tongue”
Would also be looked at as formal standard English, for the same reason- she is a teacher. My mom also sometimes relaxes and uses slang, even in the classroom as well as outside of school. #teacheredumatters
@DrPorcher My “mother’s tongue” is what we would categorize as standard mainstream English. She grew up around it, she heard it in the classroom and she is a first grade teacher, so it is also what she uses in the classroom. It aligns to what is deemed “formal”. #teacheredumatters
I still think formal is used more in a professional setting and informal is more comfortable. However, I see more clearly now how one views language as professional or comfortable is based on their personal life experiences. #teacheredumatters
Formal language is more uncomfortable and what you use in the academic/professional setting. Informal language is more comfortable and the language people typically use with family or friends. I think whoever is talking gets to decide what the language is. #teacheredumatters
