“I have been informed about the possibility of wearing the number 7 shirt for Portugal, but for now, I have decided not to accept it.

The number 7 represents much more than just a number in the Portuguese national team. It represents years of history, dedication, memories and, above all, Cristiano Ronaldo.

There are public issues surrounding Cristiano and the national team at the moment, and I don’t believe this is the right time for me to take that shirt.

I have enormous respect for Cristiano, for everything he has done for Portugal and for the influence he has had on generations of Portuguese players.

Until the current situation is fully resolved and the truth is known, I would rather continue representing Portugal with another number.

This is not about refusing an honour. It is about respect.
