Santiago Ramón y Cajal, born on 1 May, 170 years ago, proved that each nerve cell is an independent entity and nerve synapses transfer nerve impulses from one cell to another. He was awarded the 1906 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine.

These words, from neuroanatomy pioneer Ramón y Cajal well over a century ago, remain current. Since his time, explorations of the brain have only revealed it to be more expansive than perhaps Cajal even imagined.
