Black Friday is here - let that globe light up! This time with Shoppy, music, colors of your choice, nerdy stats - with gravity or without!

Entrepreneurship has no zip code.
@Shopify merchants outside major cities generated $2.9 billion in cross-border sales last year. Up 342% since 2019.
And new shop creation outside metro areas is rising in every country we tracked.
Ambition used to need an address. Now it just needs an internet connection.

This year the #RailsWorld 2026 CFP closes on Saturday, May 16, at 23:59 pm Central (Austin) time, and we will strive to inform speakers as quickly as possible if they are accepted (or not). The committee is looking forward to reviewing your submissions! https://t.co/CpxcdZ5w7E
As a blind programmer, this is one of the most meaningful things I've worked on!
I'd love your thoughts on the PR, especially if you've never thought about a11y. People new to it catch what I could be taking for granted.
Thanks to the Rails Foundation for the trust ❤️
This Week in Rails:
A new `rails query` command lands: run read-only ActiveRecord queries from the command line and get structured JSON output with columns, rows, pagination metadata, query time, and generated SQL. Subcommands include `query schema`, `query models`, and `query explain`.
Also: static CSS and HTML files now include `charset=utf-8` in Content-Type, new Rails apps get a PWA offline fallback page, and ParameterFilter gains O(1) hash lookup for exact-match regexp filters.
Read all that and more in this week's newsletter: https://t.co/Hpw8t2JQaK
9 years @Shopify today 🎉✨
while i'm still not 100% what my job is, i'm 100% sure that i'm doing important work, in the right place, with the right people
what a privilege 💚
Ruby on Rails scales from PROMPT to IPO. Token-efficient code that's easy for agents to write, and still beautiful for humans to review. https://t.co/DIVVFI0ItM
I benchmarked which language works best with Claude Code. Ruby, Python, and JavaScript came out cheapest,
fastest, and most stable!

Convention over configuration set the path for 20+ years of great training data for AI to use today. Not only does this mean agents do great with Rails, but also that squishy humans can quickly and confidently review the output without a jungle of distracting boilerplate.
Looking forward to trying this one out!
Cursor's visual editor was a miss. We have tried WYSIWYG HTML editors for decades, they never worked, and it isn't an AI problem.
Figma showed the way to go and Pencil builds on that with an open file format and agent-aware extensions.🚀
There's been a massive spike in sales emails that get basic details wrong, like the company I work for, *to my business email*. That's poor strategy *and* execution. Latest one was selling me a product so I can manage "my international team @37signals" (@dhh forwarding that to you lol jk).
For all sales folks out there: please do better. That's an immediate pass for me, doesn't matter what you're selling.
Shopify is building the foundation for agentic commerce.
Universal Commerce Protocol, which we co-developed with Google, is now live. UCP will make it faster for agents and retailers to integrate.
It’s open by default, so platforms and agents can use UCP to start transacting with any merchant. Major retailers are already using it.
Agents can handle everything from discovery to fulfillment, and support things like discounts, subscriptions, and loyalty programs. We’ve accounted for all types of commerce.
Ruby 4.0 is here! New ZJIT compiler, Ruby::Box namespaces, redesigned Ractor API, and Set is now a core class. Check out what's new #Ruby#Ruby4#RubyLang#Programming#WebDev#OpenSource

I recorded my gratitude for the most beautiful, poetic, and productive programming language ever made for Ruby's 30th birthday celebration in Tokyo. Thanks to @hsbt for the invitation 🙏
