It’s been said many times since the #gymnastalliance kicked off… ‘how long will it be before ballet has its own reckoning’? This one will be extremely interesting to follow. Ballet like gymnastics has abuse built in. Perfection based practices = long term mental health issues.
1/2 Appeal in @dancingtimes for anyone with information about Royal Ballet School regarding abuse, bullying, belittling or witnessing such behaviours to come forward in total confidence to LADO and police
When safeguarding remains voluntary with no legal reason to report it how can anyone say we protect the vulnerable? @ASobocki makes a compelling statement here #balletmetoo#webelieveyou#MR@mandatenow
Mandated reporting is the only solution. Unless people know it will cost them more to keep silent then speak out, they will keep silent. Why? To protect their careers, to save themselves being labelled a troublemakers. People need to know the consequences of silence - Prison!
@GamperJoanna @dancingtimes@pointe_magazine@RADheadquarters@onedanceuk@ISTDdance@NSPCC_Press@mandatenow Safeguarding is voluntary, there is no law offering the true protection needed. A change in law for mandatory reporting would do this. You are right to be astounded. We need law supporting independent reg bodies. Reg body on its own doesn’t work. See Brit Gymnastics.
It is thanks to the courage of women speaking out against abusers, even in the face of “repercussions,” that makes industries like ballet safer for others.
Our latest @itvnews investigation into allegations of sexual assault in ballet after the sentencing of Yat-Sen Chang.
Is this to be ballet’s own, long overdue #MeToo moment? The lack of a watchdog body to protect women in dance again results in women being scared to report abuse. “You won’t be believed,” one professional dancer tells me.

Someone please explain to me why we think we are a nation that puts child protection at the forefront when these stats show how far behind we really are! #MR@NSPCC_Press@CYPCS@ChildrensComm@children1st
"I had no evidence".
With well-designed #MR you can report a suspicion of #CSA on reasonable grounds.
We are out of step with the #RoW in not having it.

Best way to drive change in establishments that abuse power and cover up is by having Mandatory Reporting Law. This would force change and stop NDAs, cover ups and create a safe and healthy culture. We must demand change #mr@mandatenow#balletabuse#ballet#audienceshouldknow
A brilliantly written piece that shines a light on some of the many things that need to change about #ballet in the UK, at both school and company level. #DancersDeserveBetter#dance#bullying#Abuse#MeToo

3/3 If we had mandatory reporting laws then encouraging everyone (not just parents) to speak out would make a difference. Without out it there is no real protection. Should child protection be voluntary? No! But it is! @ScotGymnastics@CYPCS@children1st@ChildrensComm@NSPCC
1/3 If your message is everyone should keep children safe then why have you singled out parents to pick up on this and report it? The Whyte review is full of parents who reported their concerns and nothing happened/cover ups. @NSPCC_Press#mandatoryreporting@gympal@mandatenow
We're pleased to officially launch our new animation, designed to help parents understand how to keep their child in sport safe and speak out if something isn't quite right. Watch it here: https://t.co/vdD4kAd4oh @NSPCC#ParentsinSportWeek
An adult and child are NEVER boyfriend and girlfriend. This is abuse clear and simple. Media please get this right. You are adding to the cultural problem by not correctly identifying this as abuse.
No, he didn’t have a 14 year old girlfriend when he was 23. He was an adult that abused a child.
The language used is a disgrace.
