@AlysonSujkowski Your not alone about seeing discrimination for being "older" and feeling behind. I applied to PhD programs after 5y as a tech. At one school an interviewing professor said "why bother"... you'll always just be a tech. Luckily I was accepted into a better school.

@J0Nelson I agree. When describing a toxic lab people say vague statements, "it's a hard lab", "it's a serious lab", "it's an independent lab". For some these are attractive statements not negative statements. I do not pick up on these ominous statements as equalling a toxic lab or PI.
