The intensifying political repression in the Philippines is just one example of a global wave in which #COVID19 is being used as a pretext to criminalise and delegitimise dissent, often through militarisation, heightened policing... https://t.co/RGEe7L8HDh

Yes, white supremacist coup attempt was appalling but this was not a surprise for many reasons from the last 4 years and the examples of US-backed coups over several decades shown on this thread. Totally on brand for the kind of US democracy that it inflicts all over the world.
This month US Americans got a small glimpse of what a coup might feel like, and they are rightly outraged. One might hope this would provoke some reflection on the *actual* coups that the US itself has perpetrated around the world. Here are some of them:
Excited to see this documentary on the Women's International War Crimes Tribunal with @LSE_WPS followed by a powerful panel of feminists including my Nanay, Indai Sajor. Should be interesting for folks exploring people's tribunals as one approach to seeking justice.
Join us for the streaming of a new documentary that reflects on the Tokyo Women's Tribunal. The streaming will be followed by a panel discussion between some of those involved in the work of the Tribunal and featuring in the documentary.

Truly devastating. My mother is in Beirut. She is OK. Been following this since I got a call from her moments after the blast. With all that is happening socioeconomically and the pandemic, my heart goes out to Lebanon. Will be following closely, looking for ways to support.
As smoke clears, port of Beirut devastated- added to casualties- billons of $ in imports including national wheat silos-seem to have been eviscerated. Homes shattered for miles. Damages will be massive and could not come at worse time when everyone is broke and hungry #Beirut

Today is the Global day of action to #JunkTerrorBill#JunkTerrorLaw standing with all Filipin@s at home and abroad who are fighting for our rights, a formidable and necessary task amid #COVID19 and systemic state repression
#Repression pandemic: the Philippines’ harsh new "anti-terror" bill enshrines in law what Duterte's government has long been doing in practice, writes @leannesajor in @openDemocracy, and human rights activists face ever greater risks to life and liberty.
