see adapting carrie to modern times isn’t just “oh they have social media too!” it’s actual incorporation of the culture- in today’s society, carrie would have been seen as a lolcow, not some thin girl who learns how to be cool. also the school shooting imagery is phenomenal
this is a great paper for people who don’t know anything about physics or mathematics to pat themselves on the back for “understanding” physics and mathematics
@comradeginger15@jurlycat@l_i_n_d_z__ have you ever considered that they’re considered most attractive because it is those features that are seen as default? every opinion is biased inherently, whether consciously or not. in a society where white is the “default/norm” from birth, that would influence/bias people.
as a white person this just made me see another way in which us as white women are the “default” for the beauty standard, she wasn’t attacking or blaming you in any way, and how the hell do you think that’s racist??
i remember i used to work with this somewhat pretty black girl & she was always complaining about how she had to get weaves, her nails done, wear makeup etc & when i inquired why in an attempt to be supportive & nice to let her know it wasn’t necessary bc i literally show most places barefaced & my hair barely brushed, she said “you don’t have too bc you’re white.” that really opened my eyes on how blatantly unknowingly racist most ppl are against us crackers
and admittedly, there’s smth to be said about that genre divide between sci fi and romance and it’s relation to misogyny and misogynistic stereotypes but that’s for another day (3/3)
i know it isn’t a fix all but this is part of why i love sci fi. there’s so many historical works to read through and see the genre develop, reflecting societal worries of the time, and still great modern standout authors. maybe part of it is its more removed from (1/2)
most books nowadays lack good prose. i also noticed that many don't make reference to surroundings, emotions, the five senses, etc. the ability to Narrate and make readers Understand is missing and many authors resort to “Saying”,if that makes sense. their prose reads like a list
the genres that are getting the worst of this downstream booktok/wattpad effect (romance, realistic fiction, fantasy). i wonder the sort of divide between sci fi and fantasy (while not necessarily a good or bad thing) is helping to almost insulate the genre from this (2/3)
i'm sorry if i talk about lesbian issues so much i just don't want to tell someone i'm a Lesbian and they think there's a possibility of me liking men. that actually grosses me out so much.
