“The failure to cease this moment & bring about a ceasefire…is a failure of leadership. He [Pres Biden] has not been very effective because he has not withheld arms” tells me Mary Robinson, Fmr. Irish President, Fmr. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights & Chair @TheElders
I’ve lived a parallel life to the over privileged, self entitled, generations of wealth, public school educated, monocultural, nepo-baby, flagrantly reckless establishment flunkies this country has produced .. and it didn’t stop me helping them integrate with normal Britons
Britain’s refugee system is uncaring, chaotic & costly.
Now is the time for a plan that is fair, kind & gets the system working again, for everyone.

The US veto stands in contrast to the values it professes to uphold. By continuing to provide diplomatic cover for the atrocities in #Gaza, the US is signaling that international humanitarian law can be applied selectively - that the lives of some people matter less than others.
How dare you utter these words as you actively arm & support #Israel as it carries out war crime after war crime in #Gaza with impunity, & the US vetoes a UNSC resolution calling for a ceasefire. Disgusting hypocrisy & double standards. The world will never forget. #ceasefireNOW
These words ring hollow 48 hours after the veto.
The real US commitment is to double standards.
By continuing to provide Israel with weapons & diplomatic cover as it commits atrocities—including collectively punishing the Palestinians—the US risks complicity in war crimes.
“Israel is not engaged in a “war” on Hamas. It is engaged in a war on the Palestinian people. This is amply evidenced by…the genocidal language deployed by Israeli leaders from the very top.” - @hzomlot

Ambassadors are queuing up to express dismay at #UN failure to implement a #Gaza ceasefire with US and UK looking isolated globally. 13 countries voted for, US against and UK abstained. 1 veto stopped the ceasefire. 80+ countries in total supported ceasefire
Despite these words, the UK shamefully *abstained* on a widely supported #ceasefire resolution.
What is the point of the UK's #UNSC seat if it abstains on issues of this magnitude & intl consensus, @David_Cameron?
Would a @UKLabour-led Govt have voted differently, @DavidLammy?
The sheer scale of civilians killed in Gaza is shocking.
The fact that 80% of the population has been displaced cannot continue.
The UK supports Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas, but Israel must be targeted and precise in its actions.
Expectations are high: “I hope you have seen the letter that has just been released, signed by over 1,000 Scientists, CEOs, Indigenous Peoples, Mayors, Governments, Youth, Health Professionals, and Faith Leaders - all urging Parties to come together around a rapid response to the Global Stocktake.”

It’s an astonishing chutzpah to meet with human rights leaders and tell them:
“And of course we see atrocities in the midst of conflict.”
While U.S. is providing unconditional military support and diplomatic cover for Israel’s mass atrocities in Gaza. https://t.co/8oChbPamYe
I've never felt so angry. We have spent two months now sharing the brutality and inhumanity in Gaza, warning of atrocities, and pulling every lever of influence we have and the US vetoes & UK abstains.
This is complicity. Anyone of conscience in those governments should resign.
The US decision to veto #Gaza ceasefire resolution is not a surprise.
But context very different to first U.S. veto on the war in October.
Then, UNSC members were keen to find common ground with @USUN on compromise language (and came close to doing so).

3 hours ago the UK ambassador told the Security Council that the scale of civilian killing in Gaza was shocking. But when it came to action, the UK decided not to vote for a humanitarian ceasefire, joining the US which used its veto.
Shame on Britain
No words left. The US is actively choosing to continue the slaughter of civilians, the mass displacement of millions of people, and the destruction of critical civilian infrastructure. War crime after war crime with explicit US support.
Mary Robinson joins leaders across sectors to call for urgent fossil fuel phase out at #COP28.
“At this critical juncture, I stand united with leaders from business and industry, young people, mayors, governors, faith leaders, and others urging countries to collaborate in order to uphold the threshold established by the Paris Agreement: the critical 1.5°C limit.
"The COP28 outcome must deliver the adoption of clear, ambitious language to urgently phase out all fossil fuels. We should reject terms like “unabated” or “abated” in the final text as this may result in prolonged debates over the next five years. We don’t have time to divert attention away from the urgent fossil fuel reductions needed this decade." - Mary Robinson

Is Israel applying the "Dahiya doctrine" in Gaza -- the deliberate use of disproportionate force "with the intention of achieving a sustained deterrent impact"? That's a war crime. Is the International Criminal Court's @KarimKhanQC paying attention? https://t.co/TOzWw1C22w
