Hamas has never carried out an attack outside Palestine and explicitly states in its objectives that all its actions are limited to Palestine. Nevertheless, since October 7, half a dozen Hamas attacks have allegedly been prevented in Germany. Only in Germany. Nowhere else.
Anyone who has read even the slightest amount about Hamas and their operational history knows that they have worked meticulously over the years to ensure their operations are contained to occupied Palestine. This is a fake story meant to scare Europeans with no basis in reality.
German journalist Hüseyin Doğru has had no access to his bank accounts and has not been allowed to travel since the EU sanctioned him in May.
The sanctions came following his reporting on the repression of pro-Palestinian activists.
This week, a Frankfurt court upheld the blocking of his accounts.
Doğru and his family now face homelessness.
Journalists critical of Western foreign policy are increasingly subject to sanctions and legal harassment designed to make their lives impossible.
January 5 updates on the situation in Iran:
The discourse on X is getting increasingly hysterical and unhinged to the point that I'm starting to step away further and rely on other platforms.
No, you do not need to have a neutral stance when you are morally outraged. But you also shouldn't just blatantly make up stuff.
For example, no there have not been any cities that have "fallen to the opposition". That's not even within the realm of truth. I think it was the 3rd time that I saw a post very seriously claiming that Qom had fallen yesterday that I started realizing this is just turning into fantasyland rather than a platform for useful news.
That having been said, here are some recent developments I found important:
1 - Subsidy Reform
The Pezeshkian administration just launched one of the biggest economic reforms in the past decade.
To summarize, they significantly reduced or entirely removed the currency subsidies for imports of essential goods and instead are giving people direct cash payments.
This is an incredibly risky move, particularly at this time.
It will lead to a significant spike in inflation for food items. At least 10-15% for things like milk and eggs. Keep in mind that one of the sparks that lit this whole fire was the noticeably higher degree of food inflation in the past few months. Now this will make that worse.
The previous system was filled with abuse, where companies would pretend to be importing essential goods, but really be buying other items they sold at a profit using the arbitrage of the currency exchange rates.
But like most issues inside Iran, there's massive tradeoffs involves. You're picking your poison. And shaking up the system like this in this situation has a lot of risks.
Everyone knows the current subsidy system isn't sustainable. But rocking the boat too hard and too fast also has major risks even in normal times, let alone a protest wave. The surgery could very much kill the patient.
2 - Israel's Message
Given the current circumstances, Israeli TV reporting that Netanyahu recently sent a message to Putin that he does not intend to escalate with or attack Iran at the moment was significant (kudos to Amwaj for reporting this earlier, which shows they have good sources).
It's pretty clear that Israel is taking the possibility of a pre-emptive Iranian attack on them seriously. If Iran believes that no matter what it does it will be attacked then it has a lot less to lose and is more likely to engage in risky actions. This type of communication is a wise move under such circumstances.
I'm believe this message came before the outbreak of current protests. However it is notable that Israeli media is reporting on it now. And I saw the message spread widely across Iranian outlets.
3 - Trump's Comments
After what happened in Venezuela, it is pretty clear that the Iranian government is taking Trump's comments on the protests more seriously.
There are concerns that he may attack and this is now a factor in their decision making on how to respond to things.
The event makes it more clear that he is neither a Bush style neocon, nor a full non-interventionist. He doesn't need to launch a 2003 style invasion to do damage. And seems to be willing to engage in risky, creative action.
I am not saying it is likely or not, but that they are considering it as a factor when choosing what to do.
4 - Mossad Involvement
The official Iranian line that is broadcast on State TV is that Mossad is behind everything and you'll even see some outlets use phrases like "Mossad mercenaries" to describe protesters.
To say I am skeptical of this would be an understatement.
However, beyond the normal language that is always used in protest periods, I have seen two more specific claims that I found more credible (though far from proven).
Firstly, there are allegations that Mossad has helped smuggle guns to certain protesters in the west of the country (where the more violent clashes are happening).
I will note that there are black markets for guns in these borders areas anyway, so there could be other sources.
And that frankly in the few cases where protesters do have guns ... they don't appear to be well trained professionals and are overcome pretty quickly. But it's not out of the realm of possibility that an intelligence agency help these guns be smuggled.
Additionally, there are a few claims that the police have found some type of encrypted app on the phones of leaders of protests that they've detained and this app is used by them to communicate with each other and organize.
Again, I find this possible to believe.
I would note in both these cases, Mossad is not running the protests. They are not the ones in the streets. They are not forcing people to come out. However, it is possible that they have given tools to select people they have so that they can network more effectively or cause more damage.
Neither is proven and I will emphasize that the government has used claims of allegations to foreign security agencies to smear people in previous rounds of protests, so any such claims should be treated with caution.
5 - Clashes in Ilam
Ilam province is a small border province in Western Iran that is next to Iraq. It is one of the most economically deprived in the country (~26 out of 31 provinces depending on what stat you're ranking on). It has also been the scene of some of the most intense clashes.
This is to the point that I noticed some domestic media outlets close to the government reported the clashes there in a different category than the rest of the country.
In one case I saw they made a list of the number of police officers injured in the entire country except Ilam, and then reported on Ilam as a separate category.
Pezeshkian just ordered a special investigation be made into the events of Ilam. That's another sign suggesting what happened there was particularly intense and more challenging for them than other areas.
I also presume you wouldn't get to the point of launching an investigation until you are confident that you have the situation under control. But that's just an assumption, we'll see in the coming days.
6 - Ilam Hospital
Separately, the Minister of Health ordered an investigation to be done about the events that happened in Imam Khomeini Hospital in Ilam.
That seems like an implicit admission of guilt there. There have been pretty credible social media reports before this that security forces surrounded the hospital, shot tear gas near or even inside of it, and attempted to grab injured protesters.
This reminded me of when Khamenei ordered the closure of the detention center in Kahrizak that some demonstrators had been tortured and killed in during the 2009 protests.
I have some skepticism there will be justice for anything that happened, but nonetheless such an investigation could have strong political repercussions in the future.

🚨 I want to share a major new development regarding my arrest in Switzerland earlier this year:
Official Swiss parliamentary report reveals serious abuses in my arrest and expulsion.
My statement:
I take note that the Control Committee of the Council of States — the parliamentary body that audits Swiss federal agencies — has today issued a report reviewing the actions of the national police agency, Fedpol, in my arbitrary arrest, detention and expulsion from Switzerland in January 2025.
These grave violations of democratic and human rights were carried out to prevent me from speaking at lawful public events — organized by Swiss citizens and residents — calling for an end to Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
As previously established, Fedpol initially rejected the request from Zurich Canton to issue an entry ban against me, finding — after consultation with the Swiss national intelligence service and the migration office — that my speech was protected under freedom of expression and that I posed no security threat.
I entered Switzerland lawfully only to be later abducted from the street by undercover police, taken to prison, and held for three days without being permitted to contact my family at any time, or to speak to my lawyer from the prison. I was then taken in handcuffs, in a cage, to the airport and expelled.
The report of the Control Committee confirms for the first time that Fedpol reversed its initial decision not to ban me after the personal intervention of its then-director Nicoletta della Valle.
The report further notes that no records were kept to justify her intervention overriding Fedpol’s original, lawful decision. (French: https://t.co/TL8S6t14DK | German: https://t.co/0mSiIHoHiB)
Della Valle is, as a matter of public record, notorious for her staunch support of Israel. Notably, shortly after leaving office as Fedpol director in April 2025, della Valle took a lucrative position with an Israeli investment firm — raising questions about conflict of interest and propriety. (https://t.co/7EtG8iuVpR)
These findings point to serious irregularities and abuses of power in the actions taken against me.
Confirmation of Nicoletta della Valle’s personal role raises grave concern that a senior Swiss law enforcement official may have abused her authority to advance the political interests of a foreign state committing genocide — in the process violating my fundamental rights and the democratic rights of Swiss citizens.
The abuses I suffered are the subject of ongoing legal action in Zurich cantonal and Swiss federal courts. I have instructed my lawyers to incorporate any relevant new evidence from the Control Committee report into this litigation.
I believe accountability is essential to defend democratic rights amid an escalating effort to silence criticism of Israel and repress growing global solidarity with the Palestinian people’s liberation struggle.

1/Fuck Sri Lanka: a 🧵
Sri Lanka's genocidal war crimes in 2009 in Mullivaikkal, occupied Eelam set a precedent for what Israel is carrying out against Palestinians in Gaza right now, as now even Israeli security experts will admit to:
Israel's close intermingling of military and civilian sites makes it difficult to know what Iran is aiming its missiles at. When Hamas does this in the tiny Gaza Strip, Israel accuses it of using human shields. https://t.co/vJ3UsEkiCj
Leute bitte nicht vergessen der einzige ort an dem jüdische Menschen sicher leben können ist der genozidale Apartheidsstaat der an 5 Fronten gleichzeitig Angriffskriege führt 🙏
