'Innate immune responsiveness predicts enhanced cellular immunity and symptomatic disease after controlled human influenza infection.'
Using #controlledhumaninfection@ChrisChiuLab with #influenza, we longitudinally analysed the immune profiles of healthy adult volunteers. Early #innate immune responses post-infection correlated with higher symptom scores and cellular immunity later. This revealed a pattern of quicker and greater immune activation to which individuals who proceed to #symptomatic disease are predisposed at the point of virus exposure. Delighted to share our new paper, out now in @NatureComms where we show that neutrophil myeloperoxidase (MPO) tracks RSV severity in infants, and can be used as a functional readout of therapeutic efficacy in the lab.

To get better protection against respiratory infections and transmission we need to achieve nasal immunity. A new @ImmunityCP review https://t.co/i1CPx5VTpH
New preprint by @alex_winnett@S_Tabachnikova et al.! We asked: which cellular immune signals control viral replication in the nose during the first days of SARS-CoV-2 infection — and how do they change with vaccination? With @ismagilovlab (1/)

Why do some get sicker from the #flu? 🦠 Amazing work by @ChrisChiuLab showing quicker #innate_immune activation at exposure predisposes individuals to symptomatic disease, but also stronger #cellular_immunity! 🔬 Read here:

A vaccine that could provide protection against multiple pathogens would be invaluable, particularly during pandemics in which knowledge of the causative pathogen is limited.
In a new Science study, researchers found that a nasal vaccine designed to stimulate innate immune cells and T cells provided protection against both viral and bacterial lung infections in mice. https://t.co/SErpKv9RrB
Fifty years ago, The Selfish Gene was published. The ideas — replicators, memes, the gene's-eye view of life — have held up rather well. The 50th Anniversary Edition is out now.
