Great to see a top rated journalist like @davidfolkenflik clear up this saga about colleague @Bob_Shireman. As the reporter states: "There's no evidence — none — to support any of those claims, despite two federal investigations."
Important story showing @Bob_Shireman’s service at ED relentlessly focused on students and never Wall St. Our democracy requires our free press to be critical, only make evidence-based claims & avoid being a political tool used by others. Thank you @NPR for setting this straight.
My colleague @Bob_Shireman has spent his career protecting students from predatory for-profit colleges, and his success has meant constant attacks on him. Glad to see this thorough piece by @davidfolkenflik exposing the hollowness of this smear campaign.

Bob is one of the most sincere, genuine and kind-hearted people I’ve ever met in DC. The sick irony is that every one of the people aiming to smear him over the years have a clear financial tie to the industry, whereas there’s no proof that he’s profited. Pure bunk.
A news story often records a moment in time, like a screengrab, yet the repercussions live on
My NPR story about @Bob_Shireman, who asked the WSJ to revisit a 2013 article that critics have used to trash his character:

I've known and worked with @Bob_Shireman for 25 years, and he is a remarkable higher education champion, but has been shamefully smeared by some for-profits schools/allies because they don't want to be held accountable. Thankful for @davidfolkenflik piece. https://t.co/AOfAxoGDc7
Long before Trump's "Big Lie" & anti-💉 nonsense, @WSJ E Board & others fine-tuned the weaponization of fake news w/ attacks like this. The recipe: 0 evidence & 💯 lies... repeated enough times to do real damage. Ty @davidfolkenflik@NPR for correcting the record.
Missed this today, but man. Now I’m mad. The #forprofit lobby loves to use this nonsense. The @WSJ does owe @Bob_Shireman an apology, as does @purduemitch. #LowerEd https://t.co/ebTW6NJeJx
@Bob_Shireman is one of the few people who have worked for years to shed light on the issues related to many for-profit organizations in higher education, and I am so thankful for his work.
Thank you to @davidfolkenflik for setting the record straight.
Former federal official Robert Shireman has been baselessly accused of corruption for years - often by critics with industry ties who point to an eight year old article in the WSJ.
My story for NPR on his quest to get the WSJ to re-revisit the report.

Excellent @davidfolkenflik article about the disgraceful smear campaign against @Bob_Shireman, abetted by the @WSJ and perpetuated by @purduemitch, @SenatorBurr, and various bought-and-paid-for shills for the for-profit college industry.

So glad to *finally* see a detailed review of the outrageous, completely false allegations made against my friend @Bob_Shireman. And equally glad we now have a clear public record of the scoundrels behind that big lie. Shireman deserves a medal. His accusers merit lasting infamy.
It should be the announced position of Merrick Garland’s DOJ that claims asserted by bounty hunters under the Texas statute will be regarded as unlawful attempts to deprive persons of their constitutional rights and will be subject to civil and criminal sanctions as appropriate.
