📚 The EAC has made dedicated efforts to strengthen education systems for a more skilled and competitive region.

Speaking at the 2nd EAC Education Conference in Nairobi, EAC Deputy Secretary General @AguerAriik highlighted key regional achievements:

🔹 TVET: The EAC TVET Qualifications Framework has been developed to support recognition of qualifications, skills mobility and stronger alignment between training and the regional labour market.

🔹 Education Data: Guidelines for compiling education statistics have been developed to strengthen the availability of comparable and reliable evidence for regional education policy.

🔹 Primary Education: The primary school curriculum has been revised to incorporate Statistics, building analytical capabilities from an early stage. 📊

🔹 Basic Education: Strategies have been developed to harmonise education systems and strengthen the foundations for lifelong learning and skills development.

🔹 Higher Education: The EAC is advancing the East African Common Higher Education and Research Area, promoting harmonisation, innovation, partnerships and mobility of knowledge and skilled graduates. 🎓

🌍 “Our responsibility now is to ensure that these frameworks translate into better learning, stronger institutions, relevant skills and greater opportunities for East Africans.”

📚 The 2nd EAC Education Conference #EACREC2026 officially kicked off today, setting the stage for 4 days of dialogue, learning and collective action on the future of education in East Africa.

🌍 The opening brought together diverse stakeholders in the education sector and Regional Ministers responsible for education, education leaders, researchers, policymakers and practitioners from across the region.

The EAC held a dedicated meeting of the Council of Ministers in Mombasa, Kenya, from 18–21 August 2026 to finalise urgent staffing matters in the Organs and Institutions of the Community.

Key decisions included:

🔹 Lifting the moratorium on recruitment.
🔹 Approving use of e recruitment for vacant positions in the EAC.
🔹 Adopting a phased recruitment plan beginning in FY 2026/27.
🔹 Approving validated job descriptions for EAC Organs and Institutions.

The Council also appointed Ms. Pascaline Balisanga Nyiramutuzo of the Republic of Rwanda as Executive Director of the East African Community Civil Aviation Safety and Security Oversight Agency (CASSOA) for a three-year period.

The decisions will strengthen continuity in the operations of EAC Organs and Institutions.

The EAC Monetary Affairs Committee has reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating the implementation of the East African Monetary Union (#EAMU) roadmap and strengthening regional financial integration during its 29th Ordinary Meeting held in Kampala, Uganda.

The Committee noted the resilience of the regional economy, with EAC growth projected at 5.2% in 2026, outperforming the Sub-Saharan Africa average of 4.3%, while inflation has eased to 6.7% from 9.6% in the previous financial year.

Members reviewed progress towards establishing a single East African currency by 2031, calling for stronger macroeconomic convergence, enhanced peer review mechanisms, and closer policy coordination among Partner States.

The meeting also advanced implementation of the EAC Cross-Border Payment System Masterplan, which will facilitate faster, more secure and affordable cross-border payments, improve interoperability, promote financial inclusion and boost intra-EAC trade.

Chairperson of the Committee and Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, reiterated that achieving the East African Monetary Union requires sustained commitment, stronger regional institutions and accelerated implementation of agreed reforms.

EAC DSG, Ms. Annette Ssemuwemba, @SMannette1 called for sustained partnership, consensus and shared responsibility among Partner States to accelerate the East African Monetary Union agenda, deepen regional integration and create more opportunities for the people of East Africa.

It started as a yellow fever research Centre in 1935, supported by the Rockfefeller Foundation and now it is an EAC Regional Centre of Excellency for Virology.

☘️Today, the East African Community (EAC) officially launched the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) as the EAC Regional Centre of Excellence in Virology in Entebbe, Uganda, marking a major milestone in strengthening East Africa’s health security and collective preparedness against infectious disease outbreaks.

The event was officiated by Uganda’s Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja. EAC’s Deputy Secretary General in @AguerAriik represented the EAC on behalf of the Secretary General.

🔹The Centre will serve as a regional hub for advanced virology research, specialised laboratory training, disease surveillance, diagnostics and knowledge sharing, strengthening the region’s capacity to prevent, detect and respond to cross-border health threats, including Ebola, Marburg and other emerging and re-emerging viral diseases.
🔹It will also foster scientific collaboration, innovation and the sharing of expertise across EAC Partner States.

#EAC Ministers have concluded the 20th Sectoral Council on Transport, Communications and Meteorology with key decisions to:

✅ Advance the EAC Railways Interoperability Bill
✅ Fast-track Regional Mobile Roaming Regulations
✅ Accelerate the Regional Air Transport Market
✅ Operationalise the Lake Victoria Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre
✅ Promote sustainable infrastructure financing through PPPs

These decisions will strengthen regional connectivity, lower the cost of doing business, facilitate trade, and support the free movement of people, goods and services across the #EAC.

EAC Ministers responsible for Agriculture and Food Security have adopted key policy, investment and regulatory measures aimed at strengthening food security, accelerating agricultural transformation, and promoting sustainable agri-food systems across the region.

Key outcomes of the 19th Session of the Sectoral Council on Agriculture and Food Security (#SCAFS), held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, included:

🔹Adoption of the EAC Regional Agri-Food Systems Investment Plan (RASIP) 2026–2035
🔹Approval of measures to strengthen implementation of the EAC Rice Development Strategy
🔹Endorsement of the Youth in Agri-Food Systems in East Africa (YASE) Platform
🔹Adoption of the EAC Strategy for the Management of Highly Hazardous Pesticides (2026–2036)
🔹Adoption of the Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) Control Strategic Framework for Eastern Africa (2026–2035)
🔹Approval of regional guidelines to strengthen animal health and facilitate regional livestock trade

📌On Saturday 4th July, the #EAC Secretary General, Hon. Amb. Stephen Mbundi, visited the Sirari–Isebania One Stop Border Post (#OSBP) on the 🇰🇪Kenya–Tanzania🇹🇿 border, where he engaged with the business community, customs, immigration and other border management agencies on strengthening cross-border trade within the East African Community.

The Secretary General reaffirmed the EAC's commitment to making cross-border trade seamless, efficient and predictable, emphasizing that well-functioning borders are essential for accelerating regional economic growth and deepening integration.

Addressing stakeholders at the OSBP, Hon. Amb. Mbundi called on border agencies and the private sector to work together towards the shared goal of increasing intra-EAC trade to 50% by 2030.

He stressed that this will require removing non-tariff barriers (#NTBs), strengthening inter-agency coordination, and creating an enabling environment that allows businesses to trade freely and competitively across the region.
