Kurds & Somalis: Ethnicity vs. Citizenship
Kurds are an ethnic group living across Türkiye, Iraq, Iran & Syria. A person can be Kurdish by ethnicity while being a citizen of one of those countries.
Somalis are likewise an ethnic group living across Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya & Djibouti. A person can be Somali by ethnicity while being a citizen of one of those countries.
The distinction is clear:
ETHNICITY = ancestry, language, culture & history.
CITIZENSHIP = a legal relationship between an individual and a sovereign state.
A Somali living in Kenya can be Somali by ethnicity but Kenyan by citizenship. Likewise, a Kurd living in Türkiye can be Kurdish by ethnicity but Turkish by citizenship.
🇸🇴 Somali ethnicity ≠ Somali citizenship.
“Ethnicity can cross borders; citizenship is based on law, state and nationality.”
You can be Somali by ethnicity without being a citizen of Somalia.
Some European countries be regretting getting into the Iraq War 'cause the US let 'em down. And now, the same countries are jumping into a war against #Iran.
