“I think Liverpool, at least, have absolutely understood where he actually needs to play. That is, of course, CENTRALLY, in the half spaces, the pockets where he needs to operate.

“But Flo also has to learn, of course. He has to play in such a way that, in the end, the manager doesn’t even consider taking him off. That’s just how it is. We can’t help him with that.

“I think they [Liverpool] will learn how to integrate him, and Flo simply has to play his game. That’s what it’s about. And I’d like to give him the opportunity to do that at some point.

“But anyone who wants to play for us HAS TO BE ABLE to counter press. I played Shinji Kagawa as a No. 10. He didn’t make a single tackle and was still one of the best counter pressing players I’ve ever had. It’s not about physicality. It’s about wanting to contribute in that respect as well.

When Virgil van Dijk arrived at Liverpool in January 2018, he didn’t just improve their defence. He helped change the trajectory of the club.

From title challengers to Premier League champions. From Champions League finalists to European champions. Domestic cups were a welcomed addition. Then came another league title.

Through it all, the man at the heart of the defence remained the same. But the man beside him kept changing.

Dejan Lovren was there at the beginning. Then came the Matip-Gomez partnership, with the two rotating alongside Van Dijk and playing a huge part in Liverpool’s most successful years under Jürgen Klopp. In 2021, Ibrahima Konaté arrived and eventually became Van Dijk’s most familiar partner of recent seasons. Jarell Quansah was another to benefit from having Van Dijk beside him. For a young centre-back learning the game, there could hardly be a better player to learn from.

Now, Konaté has moved on to Real Madrid, Jérémy Jacquet looks to be the long-term successor, but injury issues have disrupted his pre-season. Giovanni Leoni is close to returning from an ACL injury. Joe Gomez is also sidelined, prompting Liverpool to bring in Barcelona captain, Ronald Araújo on loan.

And then there’s 18-year-old Ifeanyi Ndukwe, who has impressed this summer and most recently lined up alongside Van Dijk. The only problem? He can’t yet play competitive football in England without a work permit.

So, as Van Dijk enters his ninth year at Liverpool, the question is familiar. Who plays beside him?

Because one thing has remained true through every partnership. Van Dijk has spent almost a decade making the players beside him better, raising the level of every partnership he has formed.

Knowing United fans were planning to disrupt the team bus on its way to Old Trafford, Liverpool sent an EMPTY bus along the expected route — while the players and staff secretly travelled a different way.

The plan worked perfectly. United supporters blocked the decoy and punctured its tyres, completely unaware that Liverpool’s real team bus was making its way calmly to Old Trafford.

🚨🗣️ Sadio Mané on the one message from Jürgen Klopp that changed his decision choosing Liverpool over Manchester United :

“I had a meeting with Tottenham at the same time. Pochettino called and said, ‘I want Sadio to come to Tottenham.’

I went to Tottenham’s training ground, saw the facilities, met the coach and spoke with him. After that, I was actually more convinced by the Tottenham project than the Manchester United project.

At Manchester United, there were too many big players. For me, that was killing me.

But then Liverpool came into the picture.

I had already met Klopp when I was at Red Bull Salzburg and he was at Dortmund. We spoke about football and tactics. He knew me and understood the kind of player I was.

When Klopp called me about Liverpool, he said:

‘How are you?’

Then he told me, ‘We will build a team nobody wants to play against. We will grow together, and you will play every game.’

That was the killer line for me.

I wanted exactly that kind of project. I wanted to be part of a team that was going to grow together.

I asked him, ‘But you already have Firmino, Sturridge and other players…?’

He said, ‘No, you will play every game.’

I said, ‘Okay. I don’t want to know anything else. I just want to come.’

Klopp also explained the way he wanted us to play. He wanted players who could run, press, track back and sacrifice everything for the team.

I knew immediately that his style suited me.

So when Liverpool called and Klopp told me he wanted me, I made my decision.

I gave my word. I had other clubs interested in me, but I said, ‘No. I’m coming to Liverpool.’

At that time, Liverpool weren’t even in the Champions League, while some of the other clubs were.

But I believed in Klopp’s project.

Araújo is a fire-fighting CB whose best traits are channel defending & aerial defending. And that’s exactly what Liverpool lost with Konaté. Spending loads on an experienced CB didn’t make sense due to Jacquet, Leoni and even Ndiaye/Ndukwe in the next gen. But it’s all about where Araújo is at mentally. His performance level has fluctuated wildly over the last 3 seasons because of poor concentration/odd decision-making. Maybe a new environment would help but it’s impossible to predict.
