Can you please enlighten us on why 127 cuts were recommended for the film Panjab '95?

The same film, now renamed ‘Satluj’, has been taken down from an OTT platform in less than two days. The CBFC has no jurisdiction over OTT platforms or international releases.

Panjab '95 tells the story of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a man who exposed documented human rights abuses and paid for it with his life. If a film based on documented facts cannot be seen by Indian audiences, then the public deserves to know why.

This sends a very direct message to filmmakers and production companies: if you're paying homage to a great personality from a minority community, you'll have to face the CBFC.

Journalists should be asking the people running this censor board some hard questions. Why are some politically insensitive films able to pass with ease while others spend years in limbo?

A red carpet for Kashmir Files, Bengal Files, and Kerala Story. Roses for Dhurandar 1 & 2, a fictional documentary/explainer for the unthinkable and the unexplainable.

How does it feel to feast on four years of a director's career?

Start the company with the goal to be the best for something (@linear is the best tool for software teams to plan and build). Each market can only support 1-2 winners, so if you are not going to be the best, you probably have already lost.

@danmall @miggi Hot liquids can deform the aligners. Coffee, wine etc can stain them. Sanitary reasons - Sugary drinks stuck between teeth and aligners can cause cavity/decay. Best to remove aligners while eating or drinking and rinse with water before putting them back on.

@likithareddy Lifting feet high up from the ground also helps gain pace by pushing harder on the mat. Minimize (ideally eliminate) shoulder movement, you can move arms to gain pace but shoulder movement wastes energy. Upper body needs to remain stable.

"Concise" doesn’t mean "short." You can have a 1,500 word memo that’s concise and a 150 word memo that’s meandering.

In my opinion, the advice of "be concise" is often misunderstood:

1. 𝗨𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲" 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀.

One of my pet peeves is people who are obsessed with being concise at all costs.

They refuse to engage with anything longer than a few sentences (or god forbid, a few paragraphs) because "you should be more concise."

When you ask for feedback, they say "make it more concise" as if they dropped an insane gem of wisdom.

If you start sharing (necessary) details, they stop you and ask you to explain in a shorter way.

They act like you're long-winded, when in reality, the nature of the situation is complex and requires more context than a straightforward scenario.

2. 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.

You know how in math class, you learned to reduce fractions?

You can reduce 22/64 into 11/32. But you can’t reduce 11/32 further, even though the numbers feel kind of big.

It’s the same with ideas. When you try to simplify a topic BEYOND how much it can be simplified, you get into the territory of misrepresenting an idea.

This could lead to a surface-level understanding and making decisions based on less information than what was available.

3. 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀.

Concision is about density of value. Your goal is to be effective, so you should use as many words as that takes. No more, no less.

If you use too few words, you might sacrifice clarity and persuasiveness.

One last note:

Paul Graham has essays that are 500 words, and some that are 3,000+ words. One of his most recent essays is 10,455 words. Is he "not concise" all of a sudden?

I'm not saying you should write essays in Slack. But if you need to, do it.

There's nothing inherently wrong with a longer message. Word count is less important--being effective and using good judgment is more important.

There's usually good intention behind the advice to "be concise," but it's not as simple as "just make everything short."

Let's not go overboard worshipping at the alter of concision.

Rashmika is an ex Google SWE.

She quits her job and now a 5 star rated Software consultant at Upwork.

She wins a 6 month fixed contract of $250K from an US Client.

She plans to buy her parents their dream home with it.

But this gig is not typical software development.

Rashmika was asked to fix, stabilise and upgrade an existing Library management codebase.

Robert is the manager and Rashmika’s point of contact.

Robert says “Rashmika, some freelancers have built our app.

Whenever we make any change to the existing code, some other features gets impacted.

The codebase is convoluted and other freelancers charge us a bomb for a small change.”

Rashmika is a pro in client handling.

She scopes down the problem and “Which specific area you are most worried about?”

Robert “The User Management and Account Management, one change leads to other”

Rashmika is shocked seeing the code.

She finds an Interface called ILibraryManagement which has almost 70+ methods like

1/ loanBook

2/ catalogManager

3/ returnBook

4/ userProfiles…

She sighs, “This is gonna be a long work day.”

Rashmika to Robert “The problem is with the fundamental design of the system.

There is a concept called Interface Segregation Principle.

The interface segregation principle (ISP) states that no code should be forced to depend on methods it does not use.

And this interface is bloated with unnecessary methods for some classes”

Robert, “But that’s an interface how do that matter?”

Rashmika, “When you hire other freelancer they create a sub-class of Library Management which has methods that they don’t need.

They don’t change the interface.

They include the unnecessary empty methods in there new class.

The empty methods simple throws an exception when called.

This has made the code

1/ cluttered

2/ very hard to unit test

3/ prone to errors

Also violating Single Responsibility Principle but let’s not go there.

So there is no segregation of features between freelancers and there is high chance that they are changing old code to make there new code work”

Robert “Are you sure?”

Rashmika smiles and says “

I have been in Google. I have seen codebases that literally runs the world.

Robert, let's start with the fundamental problem then we work upward to find and fix bigger issues.

How does that sound?”

Robert, “Aye aye Captain!”

Few points to consider :

1/ There can be plethora of problems but if the fundamental structure of the code is weak it weakens the entire system.

2/ ISP was introduced to improve Code Understandability, Maintenance, UT

3/ ISP if not followed violates SRP and cascade of failure can happen.

4/ Rashmika is a fictional character

5/ There are many other ways to fix the given problem, but this story only explains the ISP in a closed context.
